How States Got Their Shapes

The "boot heel" of Missouri that takes a chip out of the corner of Arkansas got added to the rest of Missouri when Missouri was made a state simply because that area seemed more environmentally and culturally similar to the rest of southeastern Missouri than to Arkansas.

I grew up in northern Missouri. We had a joke there that if Missouri gave the boot heel back to Arkansas, it would increase the average intelligence in both states.
