We live in very interesting times where we are able to sit back and watch while so many scientific facts which were mentioned in the Quran (over 1400 years ago) are finally coming into the light. Another interesting realm where the Quran manages to provide insight are the prophecies and historical references which are made therein. The Quran contains a number of different prophecies (most of which have already taken place).

The Quran correctly predicted that the Romans would in a few years time defeat the Persians.
[Quran 30:2-4] Link

Quran correctly predicted that Abu Lahab a staunch enemy of Islam would die as a disbeliever.
[Quran 111:1-5] *Critics may make the claim that this is not hard thing to predict, although Abu Sufyan another well known enemy of Islam later accepts Islam. Link1, Link2

Quran correctly predicted that the Muslims would be able to reenter the Sacred Mosque (Mecca).
[Quran 48:27] Link

Quran correctly identifies a close ally of the Egyptian Pharaoh during the time of Moses, by the name of Haman.
[Quran 28:6, 8, 38; 29:39; 40:24, 36] Link

Quran correctly predicted the Jewish people would be gathered together from among various nations, such as in the creation of state of Israel.
[Quran 17:104] Link

Quran states that God would preserve the Pharaoh who lived during the time of Moses as a sign for later generations.
[Quran 10:90-92] Link1, Link2

The city of Iram (Lost city) which is mentioned in the Quran and was thought to be a myth was rediscovered around this time.
[Quran 89:6-8] Link

In the Quran God promises to protect the Quran from changes/corruption.
[Quran 15:9] *Muslims are in agreement regarding the integrity of the text. Link1, Link2

In the Quran God promises to make Islam the Dominant religion in the World (despite the polytheists, pagans, idolaters, and disbelievers being averse to this).
[Quran 61:9] *Suni Islam is understood to have between 1.2 to 1.4 billion followers (2006), Surpassing Roman Catholicism as the world's largest religion around the time of 2006. Link

So far the only prophecy which seems to have not yet occurred (before what are considered to be the “Major Signs/Events”), seems to be discovery of the exact location where Noah's Ark came to rest. This is despite countless expeditions and even recent claims.

In the Quran God tells us he has left the Ark of Noah “as a sign” for those who choose to accept his advice/warnings.
[Quran 54:13-15; 11:44]

The Return of Jesus [Also not yet occurred, although this is event is said to occur as one of the Major Signs]
In the Quran God plainly states that Jesus was not killed or crucified, but God lifted him up, and that he will be sent back before the comes to an end as a sign for those who disbelieve.
[Quran 4:156-158; 43:61]

[Islamic Eschatology Timeline]

Some Jews believe that the year 2239 represents the “latest time for the initiation of the Messianic Age”, from my understanding they base this idea off of “the Hebrew year 6000”. Although I would be hesitant to place a specific time or year on the arrival of the Messiah, is it fair to say that 9 out of 10, or 90% of the prophecies and historical references which the Quran mentions will take place, have already taken place or been confirmed (not Including the Major Signs)?

Please take a look at the timeline image which has been included. I wasn't able to find a decent one online, so I just put one together myself. If you notice something which needs correcting please just mention it in the thread and I will take a look when I get the chance. Also a great lecture which may help to provide some insight into the topic is "The Return of Jesus Christ" by Kamal El-Mekki.

Included for Context - Minor Signs of "Yawm al-Qiyāmah" (The End of The World), Major Signs of "Yawm al-Qiyāmah" (The End of The World)

The sun is about half way through its lifespan so roughly another 5 billion years.

You know people have been saying crap like this for thousands of years, right?

What makes this any different to those stupid failed ideas?

I think a big Yawm is in order. What a complete load of fecal matter this all is - and what a waste of electrons . False unfaithful prophet.........

No, neither, it always flows to the ocean and stinks it up ( both ) .

Great video at the end of the OP. Apart from the obsession with fornication and sexual orientation, the "minor sign" which struck me most was "men will wear silk". So my tie collection is a sign of the end times! Cool.

Jewish war = Jesus second coming, end of story.
So there you have a lie already in quran, because the bible don't talk about the end of the world as planet, it talks about the end of the Jewish times (Priesthood, Temple). And if you understood this then you realize that there are no more Prophets after 70 AD, so therefore he just made things up.
As we would say copy and paste from the bible books. So he is just another crook.

Wow. Quintessential example of hindsight/confirmation bias. What a load of dreck. Take your religion woo elsewhere- it has no place on a skeptic forum.

Welcome to the forum Yellow Astra. I think you'll fit in just fine.

We'll have to close down the Religion and Philosophy forum, if you chase all the woosters away.

The Quran correctly predicted that the Romans would in a few years time defeat the Persians.

The Roman-Persian war ended in 629, the Quran didn't exist until after 632. But even assuming that Mohammed did predict who would before the fighting ended, so what? If he guessed the outcome randomly he'd still have a 50% chance of being right.

Quran correctly predicted that Abu Lahab a staunch enemy of Islam would die as a disbeliever.

Predicting that a staunch enemy of a religion will die without converting to that religion has a very high (although not certain) chance of being true. Not impressive in the slightest.

Quran correctly predicted that the Muslims would be able to reenter the Sacred Mosque (Mecca).

A thought occurs to me. The Quran wasn't written until after Mohammud died, so how can we be in any way sure that the "predictions" that are supposed to have come true were not added retrospectively to bolster the reputation of their prophet?

Quran correctly identifies a close ally of the Egyptian Pharaoh during the time of Moses, by the name of Haman.

How do we know it was correct? Looking it up, the only source I can find that supports this claim is the Quran itself. If there's nothing to support this claim other than the fact that it's mentioned in the Quran, then why should we take it as evidence of the Quran's accuracy?

Quran correctly predicted the Jewish people would be gathered together from among various nations, such as in the creation of state of Israel.

The Quran borrowed heavily from the Bible. This prediction is clearly taken from Deuteronomy 30:1-5.

Quran states that God would preserve the Pharaoh who lived during the time of Moses as a sign for later generations.

So you admit that the Quran was wrong? The Pharoah died long, long ago, so it's clearly wrong..

Or are you talking about the Egyptian practice of embalming and preserving the bodies of the Pharaohs? All Pharaohs got that treatment and this was well known practice even in Mohammad's time. It was done by humans, not God, and everybody knew about it. No special revelations here.

The city of Iram (Lost city) which is mentioned in the Quran and was thought to be a myth was rediscovered around this time.

Rediscoverd at what time? Looking up that city, all I find is that in 1996 an amateur archaeologist claimed to have found the remains of that city at Shisr in Dhofar province, but later realized that he was wrong. A later report in 2002 by a geology professor revealed that the NASA satellite data that the claim had been based on was misleading, and the site was just an isolated watering hole with a single building.

There's no evidence that this city the Quran claims that God destroyed ever existed.

In the Quran God promises to protect the Quran from changes/corruption.

If it was God protecting the Quran from changes/corruption, why did Uthman ibn Affan find it necessary to compile a standardized Quran in 653 and send copies of it to every province along with orders that all other Qurans were to be burned?

*Muslims are in agreement regarding the integrity of the text.

People who are convinced that the text is true also happen to believe that it's reliable? So what?

In the Quran God promises to make Islam the Dominant religion in the World (despite the polytheists, pagans, idolaters, and disbelievers being averse to this).

[Quran 61:9] *Suni Islam is understood to have between 1.2 to 1.4 billion followers (2006), Surpassing Roman Catholicism as the world's largest religion around the time of 2006. Link

Catholicism is just one of the many denominations of Christianity, so that leaves Islam still sitting at #2.

Your entire post is garbage.

Thanks for taking the trouble to do that, Brian-M. It's beyond stupid that anyone should have to, but there we are.

I'd just add that this one:
Quran correctly predicted that the Muslims would be able to reenter the Sacred Mosque (Mecca).
is also a 50/50 chance. They either would or wouldn't re-enter Mecca. Again, this is not even slightly impressive a prediction.

mikeb768......what would impress us much more would be a list of as-yet-unfulfilled predictions, which we could then tick off as they happened. Any chance of that list?

And what about a list of those predictions which have turned out to be outright failures? Don't suppose you have that to hand, do you?

Whatever became of that clear error thread anyway? Has Christianity swapped out the Holy Spirit for Mary as a member of the trinity yet? Or was Muhammed just being ignorant?

That is manifestly untrue. Some of the Quranic references are examples of the muddled and inaccurate versions of scriptural stories which Muhammad sets down in various places. He makes Haman a minister of Pharaoh and a contemporary of Moses.
28:6 And establish them in the land and show Pharaoh and [his minister] Haman and their soldiers through them that which they had feared.
29:39 And [We destroyed] Qarun and Pharaoh and Haman. And Moses had already come to them with clear evidences, and they were arrogant in the land, but they were not outrunners [of Our punishment].
But in the Biblical source (which is most certainly fictional) he is the minister of the Persian King Xerxes. See Wiki (Purim).
According to the Book of Esther, Haman, royal vizier to King Ahasuerus (presumed to be Xerxes I of Persia], planned to kill all the Jews in the empire, but his plans were foiled by Mordecai and his adopted daughter Esther who had risen to become Queen of Persia. The day of deliverance became a day of feasting and rejoicing.
Far from being
insight ... and historical references ... The Quran contains a number of different prophecies (most of which have already taken place)
the Haman story is a retold fiction containing garbles and errors in transmission between the Jewish text and Muhammad's account of it. It contains no prophecies of any real event whatsoever.

The prophecy regarding Abu Lahab is not one of the most exalted parts of the Quran. Did God really compose these words and give them to Muhammad via an Angel? And is the poor man in hell, as here predicted?
In the name of God, the most compassionate, the most merciful (بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم)
Perish the two hands of Abu Lahab, and perish he,
His wealth will not avail him or that which he gained,
He will [enter to] burn in a Fire of [blazing] flame,
His wife [as well] - the carrier of firewood (thorns of Sadan which she used to put on the way of the Prophet).
Around her neck is a rope of twisted fiber (masadd).
Sura Al-Masadd.

We probably don't have that long. Conditions on Earth will become unbearable before the sun actually becomes a red giant.

If i recall correctly i read estimates of the earths surface being habitable for large and complex multicellular organisms for about 1 Billion years more, although i don't know how reasonable such estimates are. This assuming of course we don't encounter some high unpredictable disaster that makes the earth completely uninhabitable, except perhaps for organisms hiding miles underground.

Why is it god botherers feel the need to distort their fairy tales so much? Is their faith so weak that they need crutches for their crutch?

That is the religion of those people. Similar for, say, DOC.

Not yet, but Pope Francis I has barely cracked his knuckles in whatever attempts he has in reforming the Church. Check the usual encyclicals coming out of the Vatican to see if that topic comes up. (Gonna bet the under on that one).

On Topic: If the 12th Imam ever arrives, and is recognized, I suspect that no small amount of trouble will attend that occasion. I am guessing that the prophecy in the OP is written from the Sunni, rather than Shia, perspective.
