How much punishment is enough?

I've seen posts where people say that pedophelia is incurable and the perps are apt to commit the crime again but heres an interesting article I read in a medical magazine called "Human sexuality" some years ago. The article says that most pedophiles don't actually commit the crime. They realise their urges are wrong and they simply don't act on them in much the same way a person who is attracted to adults doesn't coerce or force a member of the opposite sex into performing sex acts against their will. Also most pedophiles who spend time in prison are usually intimated by the thought of having to go back. I've read posts that say that recidivism is nearly 100% but thats simply not true. I've also heard that since the stigma against child molesters is so severe that most of these pedophiles who resist their urges are afraid to seek treatment. In Georgia USA such people have to go on a list even if they never commit the crime. Any thoughts on this?

If nothing else, you have to love the way lefties parse things...it sorta goes without saying that ol TC was talking about BAC behind the wheel....that's sorta a cultural given. Yeah, folks get arrested and charged with "public drunkeness" after peeing on a statue of a Civil War general or deciding that they don't need to wear clothes at the mall or some such...but anyone not simply interested in nit-picking every tittle and jot as a means of avoiding the issue, would not jump in with this sort of thing.

Avoiding the issues like you ?

"the recidivism of sex offenders is 100%"

and
'feminism is responsible for the sexualization of children'.

No evidence, no data, no ability to reason or be sceptical.

You lack any skills of argumentation or demonstration of critical thought so you resort to the ad hom or pithy retort.

In other words you lack wit and ability.

You aren't even funny to boot, jedi and hamme were original, you parrot.

So provide links and demonstrate your assertions, if you can.

See this is the stuff that makes me hate the entire "Registered Sex Offender" List.

What starts this junk? Scare tactics from the news aimed right at Soccer Moms.

Halloween night, my local 11 o'clock scarenews runs this:

Where your children molested while out trick-or-treating?

Here are the key questions to ask them when they get home and how to examine them physically to find out!

That sounds interesting. All I can say is I'd like to dig deeper into what the article says. Do you have a link to it? (if it is that you saw it on the internet)

In Illinois you can be placed on the list for being charged with a crime and not convicted.

(c) A finding not resulting in an acquittal at a hearing for the alleged commission or attempted commission of the offense.

Now note that charges can be dismissed but if the grand jury recommended you go to trial you can be placed on the registry.

I've never seen soo many pedophile sympathizers in all my life! Rather scary!

We're not pedophile sympathizers, far from it - but you do realise that these laws make it harder for law enforcement agencies to track registered offenders, right? If they have no where to live, they go underground. If they cannot live within the support networks of their communities, they are more likely to re-offend.

Issues like these are emotional, of course, but that just means you need to be even more careful about being objective and rational than you might be otherwise.

See, this is why I loathe joining discussions like these. People are quick to judge and label others as actually enabling pedophiles if you don't support the "KILL ALL PEDOS!" approach to things.

My cousin was not a pedophile. He was just a kid himself but he is now treated as if he is a pedophile.

This is just the kind of irrationality that I'm arguing against.

As a rape survivor, age six by stranger, age 12 by family, I really appreciate you calling me a pedophile sympathizer.

You just made my day, can you take your irrational little self to some other forum and lighten their day?

I guess that means you believe that someone arrested for a crime is guilty of the crime. Period. Even if the courts find them non-guilty, even when the "evidence" is things like giraffes and elephants being sacrificed in the backyard of a suburban home as a part of a Satanic sex ring.

After all we must "believe the children!" even when they are being told what to say by overzealous prosecutors.

And when a 17 yr-old boy has consensual sex with his 15 yr-old girlfriend...he should be imprisoned for 10 years and be registered as a sex predator the rest of his life.

Good thinking.

Typical conservative, overlooking the plight of all those poor giraffes.:D

I think after a sex-offender (and it should define only serious sex offenders that you really want to be kept away) completes his sentence, they should do an individualized evaluation on him to determine what his odds of re-offending is.

If they are determined to be likely to re-offend, they get put on the list. If not, they don't have to carry the lable for life. At least that's how they did it in Minnesota (not sure now, but they did) I think it was a good idea.

Enough to be equivalent to the pain suffered by all persons involved in what was done plus at least 20% for punitive purposes.
