• Quick note - the problem with Youtube videos not embedding on the forum appears to have been fixed, thanks to ZiprHead. If you do still see problems let me know.

How long will Facebook last?

MySpace is still widely used by bands for music networking, FYI. Which is unfortunate since it's so horrible really.
Oh yes, MySpace is technically an utter trainwreck. I was amazed when I came to try it just how badly it's constructed.

Facebook is a much, much better thought-out system. I have little use for it personally, but I expect it to be around for quite some time.

All these geniuses here...and nobody can come up with a Facebook-killer!?

Oh well, as I tell my friends, I have all the technical ability to develop just about any website or software, but just lack the one creative IDEA. :(

Even if you had an idea that is better than Facebook, I imagine that you would have a very hard time overtaking it.

So you think that it will stop being beneficial to be able to find people you knew in highschool and the like? Why?

Yeah, novelty, over.

Yes you seem to think people will step away from facebook and go to twitter or email. I don't see why people would do that.

facebook is going the way of myspace. I quit my myspace about 4 years ago on a whim.

I hate facebook, I liked myspace better. Facebook has a cruddy interface, and worse, a bunch of people I hardly knew in high school are my "friends", as well as family. That severely limits my free speech (I felt much better on Myspace saying what I wanted, esp about things like sex and drugs)

The kids in high school today will not need or want to "re-connect", so that novelty will be gone, since they will already be connected via other forms.

I'd say, by 2014, facebook will be as dead as myspace is today.

The only reason I use facebook is because some of my favorite authors actually talk on it, and even reply to what I write sometimes, which is quite a thrill, but a niche website 3.0 version could easily fulfill that.

really, I don't care for everyone's updates, I check facebook about twice a day, and do so for about 3 minutes, mostly out of boredom. I knwo a lot of people obsessively are on facebook, but the thing is, eventually, they are going to find it was an embarassing part of their youth, and part ways with it.

And facebook corners the American market, not the market. IIRC, BeBo is a big competitor in the world market.

predicting the internet is difficult. Google is around to stay, because they pretty much stick with what works. I'd guess FB is going to continually re-tool to try to stay competitive, and lose customer base every time. Furthermore, how we communicate in the next few years may evolve from typing to something else, or there could be some new formulas for social networking. I'd guess one would be where you could easily separate your personal, business, and hobby contacts. To me, facebook's biggest issue is it's lack of "privacy".
