How come AOL is still in business?

And yes, apparently there are a lot of areas in the US where dialup is all you can get unless you're willing to pay for satellite service. There are times I think our neighborhood is one of them. We have a crappy small cable company, although it's a better one than when we moved here, and the clean-line DSL has been downgraded badly on us.

My last job -- as of 2013 -- they were still using a dial-up service. We had about 400 employees, probably forty or fifty terminals, and it was lightning fast. I think we were a Verizon customer. Our IT guys told me there was a reason why we still used dial-up but I don't remember what it was. :o

Back in the dark ages when I decided to quit Netzero dialup for broadband, I called the company to terminate service. The girl start reading at breakneck speed from a long prepared script. My mind started to wander as she read through all the legalese. But fortunately I was paying attention when she said "And we'll charge you five dollars per month for backup service." I said "Wait. What? Say that again." They wanted to keep charging me for service.
After I made it clear I wasn't interested, she went back to her high speed spiel. After another minute or so she said "And we'll send you a copy of Norton Antivirus..." I cut her off immediately and said "NO! Don't send me anything. Don't charge me for anything. I don't want to have anything to do with your company any more!"

After that experience, I can see why an elderly person might still be paying for something they don't need.

Jeezus, I kept my Compuserve account from 1982 until about 1999.

I've still got that account number and password in muscle memory.

I was shocked to recently read that Yahoo makes more money than Twitter. I don't have the source handy but I could probably pull it up if necessary.
