How bad is ecstacy?

People should be allowed to do Ecstasy if they want. It's true that it can be dangerous if used incorrectly however most cases of 'deaths' from Ecstasy are due to impurities added to the drug and not the drug itself. Drug dealers frequently add other material when producing Ecstasy to increase production and many of those other materials are very harmful. This is one of the main reasons people die from it. The same goes for many illegal drugs.
Do you mean "recreational drugs" when you refer to illegal drugs?

To a certain extent, I agree with you, in that people ought to be allowed to go to hell in a manner of their own choosing.

The trick is to be well informed. The impurities matter you raise argues for a side benefit of legality being that better process control could reduce that harmful side effect, all other hazards noted in this thread considered.

DR

In my student days, and living in the Sin City of the Netherlands, I have tried out most 'recreational drugs'.

One thing that I miss here is the self-confidence factor.

I found that if you are not a solid personality, the chance of having a bad trip greatly increase.

Also, maybe somebody can help me here, there is this 'myth' that giving somebody who has a bad trip some sugar will get them out quicker.

My only bad trip was on psilocybin; I had three times the normal amount. And it was not very funny; I was unable to have a normal flow of time.
Some moments time would almost be standing still, at other times it would go fastforward.
And the worst thing was that I wanted to watch Star Trek Voyager's first episode... but I lost track of what was going on....

About ecstasy, I'll say the same thing Timothy Leary said about crack:

"I don't think you should criticize if you haven't even tried it."

In the article from Dr. Drew's website, I see that one of the things that MDMA is listed as affecting is serotonin. Serotonin is modulated by selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRI's. SSRI's appear to be implied in the mass shootings in schools and other psychotic acts.

On a side issue, what is mmkay?

Hold on there... where are you getting the bit about SSRIs? I did an admittedly quick scan of the link you posted and didn't see them mentioned. The only people I've heard claim that SSRIs might cause mass shootings are the scientologists, and I know they're crazy.

Evidence?

I think basset is generalising a bit:

MDMA affects serotonin, serotonin is a neurotransmitter, mentally ill people have altered levels of neurotransmitters so therefore MDMA makes you mentally ill!

I don't think calling for evidence will help, Basset needs to read up a little more on brain chemistry to realise it isn't quite that simple.
