Cont: House Impeachment Inquiry - part 3

I'm asking, was there a way to impeach, and send the articles over, while still keeping the House subpoenas alive while the requests were being litigated.

I'm asking, was there a way to impeach, and send the articles over, while still keeping the House subpoenas alive while the requests were being litigated.

The house can issue subpoenas any time they want. They could do it tomorrow.

It's important to remember the Republicans didn't win anything by this. This was a foregone conclusion. I'd rather be Democrat explaining why I followed the evidence and the law as opposed to being a Republican saying it doesn't matter.
The only hope for democracy in this country is if we sweep Republicans and Trump out of office in Nov.

And I hope there are people watching out for election fraud because it's a real risk this year more than ever.

I'm asking, was there a way to impeach, and send the articles over, while still keeping the House subpoenas alive while the requests were being litigated.

This is typical of the Democrats, Pelosi caved to the GOP complaining about dragging things out. And I suspect they believed their Obstruction of Congress Article would have some impact explaining the reason for not pushing subpoenas.

They were right of course about Trump holding everything up in the courts. But I suppose if they had pushed for the subpoenas, McConnell would simply have made that his focus of complaint.

As Senator Murkowski observed, the Dems rushed a poor case to trial, and it's not the Senate's job to fix the House's mess, or find out the truth, or keep with the precedent of having witnesses at trial, or anything else. Trump WINS.

IOW, the GOP has no responsibility for Trump's criminal behavior. Does it not dawn on Murkowski that it's the US citizens she should be concerned about?

It's like saying, since the cops screwed up you don't care that the crook is breaking in next door.

It's not pointless and sad. It ties everyone to a position and that makes it harder for a politician to spin. For example CPAC dis-invited Romney because he voted for witnesses.

And the retribution for daring to not toe the Trump/McConnell line begins.

"... suppressing minority votes through shady, but legal, means."

A loophole? Not fraud? Right there is how apologists for this scumbaggery reveal their inner thoughts. Suppressing votes, no matter how 'legal', strikes at democracy itself. It's definitive of an anti-democratic bent.

The suppression of a vote is arguably worse than acceptance of a fraudulent one made. For it denies a right that's (nominally) protected. I'm aghast at the extent and the relative acceptance of voter suppression in the US. Your own blithe dismissal is yet another damning indictment in the country's slipping toward a monarchic, kleptocratic oligarchy.

Other means of suppressing votes was to limit voting machines in Democratic areas, require voter ID but then make getting one impossible for the poor, and purging voter rolls using specious criteria.

I have some small hope that in Tuesdays SOTU speech, The PDJT is going to say something so abhorrent, so egregious, so clearly against the best interest of the nation, that several Republicans will feel no choice but to change their votes over to CONVICT on Wednesday.

And I would laugh at him.
Expect a lot of sniffing, monotone voice and given Trump's history, maybe he'll go off script and talk about the deep state and the DNC server in Ukraine.

You can bet he's going to dis Biden in some way.

In three months he can create enough of a mess that it will take four years for his successor to clean up, if he or she can.

Edited to add: Actually, now that I think of it a little, he's already caused enough damage to require a decade or two of cleanup.

He hasn't done it by himself, either. In fact, most of the damage -- religious right judges/justices, gutting environmental regulation, abuse of immigrants, etc. -- would have been done by any of the others on the Klown Kar as well.

True, but doing it to begin with would have gotten the litigation clock started.

I think McGahn is still under subpoena from way back to the Mueller investigation. He was ordered to testify Nov. 25 but that's going to the appellate court.

Most headlines are suggesting that he won't be impeached.

I don't know crap about politics so I have a question. Let's pretend that he were impeached... would he then be able to run for the 2020 election?

I don't want this guy for president any way but I'm curious about how that works.

Where have you been? Outer Mongolia?:D

There is no 'suggestion' Trump will be acquitted. McConnell and the other GOP senators have made that abundantly clear and they have the votes. By the way, he's already been impeached. That's what the House does. It's the Senate that votes on whether to convict or acquit. But Trump will always be the third president to be impeached.

Even if Trump were convicted and removed from office, it would be up to the Senate to include banning him from holding the office again.

Then most Headlines are wrong, he's already been Impeached. What probably won't happen is that he'll be removed from office. These are two different things. Being Impeached is like being indicted. Removed from Office is like being found guilty and sent to jail.

This would be a question put to the Senate at the time of Removal. They would have the option to also include a Ban for life, so merely being removed would not prevent re-election, but the Senate could add that stipulation to the Removal.

I doubt if he'll go off script. He's demonstrated he can sometimes read his lines. But in the past, just as pundits are offering him mild praise for staying focused, he erupts on Twitter spewing toxic drivel, except he sounds even more unhinged than usual due to having had to exercise self-control for a whole 40 minutes or whatever.

ETA: Ignore the thumbs down.

Unless criminal (Felony) charges are brought against him and he's convicted of those charges, yes he could run again. But I'm sure Pence would pardon him. but that is a short time frame between now and November. Or the Senate could ban him from ever running again.

That's the Republican playbook, isn't it? Inherit a country that's in a pretty good state, spend your entire time ruining it for the benefit of the few, leave office when the consequences of that hit so you can blame the other guy, wait for them to fix the country again, lather, rinse, repeat.

At best, at very best, we're looking at the Republicans using Trump to prove that the "government doesn't work" for the next decade minimum.
