AP: BREAKING: Police: "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett sent himself racist and homophobic letter and was dissatisfied with his salary.

what the next level ****....

Smollett committed a crime (making up BS to the police), and race was involved (the imaginary white perpetrators were racist)...
The police report makes no mention of race and it doesn't even imply a race. It mentions that no distinguishing features were visible at all and that would include race. If Smollett had given any indication of race it would have been in that report.

Now, we do know that he started saying things in public after that police report - things that he didn't say in the report. So the cops called him back in for more questioning. I don't know if there was then a second police report (which we haven't seen), or if there really was a second interview, or what. We know that the police kept telling us that Smollett was cooperating. But then he wouldn't give up his phone so it's sort of a mixed bag of cooperation.

It is possible that he never uttered the word "white" in any formal statement to police. Somebody else here on the forum might know more about that.

You are excused, no one would have thought he'd be that stupid.
There is also stupidity in accepting a check rather than cash.

There was some extraordinary mutual trust going on between the brothers and Smollett. They had high confidence that nobody would get busted by police and nobody would just start to talk around water coolers.

It's said that anyone can sue anyone for anything. But would 20th Century Fox sue Smollett for lost revenue?

Wonder why they'd be mad? Nice easy case to investigate. They end up looking supremely professional. The accused has assets so even the payday is pretty secure, not that the cops are accountants and even care about the checkbook. Hell, they got to arrest three black guys and ransack their houses
26 detectives assigned to the case that could have been put to better use on real crimes. According to the Chief, the case got so much attention because the press played it up so much, he wasn't happy with them either.

One theory I've seen is that Smollett intended for this attack to be caught on camera. That the country was supposed to be rocked by video footage of two racist goons beating up a black man on the streets of downtown Chicago. That the whole thing was intended to incite political violence.

By the way, to all the folks who are allegedly perplexed by what race grifter means or who is a race grifter?

Trying to exploit a fake hate crime to get negotiating leverage on one's ******* salary is a race grift by a race grifter.

Add it to your lexicon, you'll be happy you did!

I'd be shocked if his contract didn't contain some sort of moral's clause. I doubt it allows for monetary damages, since most times these clauses just allow for the other party to simply cancel the contract completely and walk away. Other times, it may require the repayment of a portion of the income derived by the contract. I doubt we'll ever find out, but with this circus, who knows?

I don't think blackness was the focus. Smollett kept saying gay men were seen as week, and he wanted a little gay boy to see the video and be empowered. I think homophobe and racist just sort of went together

It seems to me that the most difficult part would be to have visually convincing punches and kicks and yet not really mess up Smollett.

I look at the photos of his injured face (there are 3 photos now) and I do not see injuries from punches. What I see looks to be strictly scratches.

The problem is that for a punch to create a laceration there normally needs to be great force. But then great force creates great swelling and bruising and Smollett didn't have those things at all.

The video would look odd because it would show great and intentional restraint by the attackers.

There's a precedent:

https://www.nytimes.com/1982/05/25/us/ohio-candidate-tells-of-paying-for-prostitute.html

In the commercial, the 38-year-old former Mayor of Cincinnati sits before the camera and says: ''Nine years ago I spent time with a woman I shouldn't have. And I paid her with a check. I wish I hadn't done that. And the truth is, I wish no one would ever know. But in the rough world of politics, opponents are not about to let personal embarrassments lay to rest.

There will be no instant replay of pigs shooting down brothers in the streets. The revolution will not be televised, will not be televised.

I don't think it was an easy case at all. The mechanics of the investigation itself, maybe. But the social and political minefield... The wrong leak at the wrong time could have triggered riots. CPD basically had to make a big show of taking the initial claim very seriously, putting a lot of (unnecessary) resources on it, not giving any hint that they might not believe Smollett's story... Easy case for the detective that caught it, but an absolute nightmare for the department as a whole.
