Hitchens- Romney’s Mormon Problem

If he would just flip-flop to some 'acceptable' religion. :)

Go Gingrich.

Whitewash and a half. There are Bishops, there is mind control, there are layers of secrecy, and members who go astray are dealt with most harshly. It's the most cult-like major religion, outdone only by Scientology.

Really? Because everyone knows I'm now an atheist and none of them have ever done anything but treat me with respect. Nor have I ever seen any of the other behaviors you made up described.

And Bishops are hardly even paid anything. And they only serve for a few years. And they don't preach on Sundays.

My personal experiences more match Travis, having grown up in CA. The Mormons in my school, were a bit conservative in manners and dress compared to the rest of the school, but very pleasant open people. However, when I went to college, I met a Mormon from Salt Lake City. He seemed to be more representative of varwoche's experiences.

I don't think that Mormons are any more intentionally seperatist than other religions, but just as all religions, when they are used to being a minority, but in one local area are much more dominant, they become much more insular, bigoted and cult-like. I found this even in my own family, where some grew up in predominantly Jewish neighborhoods and developed a lot of the features that varwoche describes, but nobody is calling Judaism a cult.

Travis, before you accuse me of making stuff up, I suggest you get your own story straight. First you post this BS...

They don't even have anything analogous to a Minister, Priest or Reverend.

And when challenged, you move the goalpost to a different stadium:

I suppose you'll also deny that there is a "First Presidency" and a "Prophet"? Just because they use different terms doesn't change the fact that there's a power hierarchy. Sharpen your pencil.

I don't need to deny anything. A Mormon Bishop does not have the same duties or responsibilities as all the others mentioned.

Most of us who have grown up in the church far from "the promised land" (a desert surrounding a poisoned lake) often find the Utah mormons a little strange.

Nah, gone will be Obama and a dozen Dem senators.

I think the Dem's will control both houses with large surpluses and the executive office come next November. First order of business will be to make the EPA rules/decisions unimpeachable by congress or the supreme court.
Second order of business will be to gut every Bush era law/bill that Pelosi and her henchmen find distasteful. Neo-con's will feverishly clutch their Rush Limbaugh dolls and tearfully fret at what has become of their great country. Ann Coulter will discover she has no income and will become the concubine of Herman Cain.:jaw-dropp
