America has 1.4 million in the military with 900,000 Reserves. All of these are hired-hands; all are volunteers seeking a job. Of these, 42 % are racial or ethnic minorities. Of these, 6.5% have had “some kind of exposure to college education”.

The economy today fights the war in Afghanistan and Iraq at a cost 0.1% of what the economy had to pay to win WWII; this figure is based upon Defense Department budget being 4% of GDP.

Thus says David M. Kennedy “In the Fourth of July debate about the state of American democracy, Kennedy, a historian at Stanford, suggested that war making was becoming too easy for American policy makers.” This article appeared in “The Atlantic” magazine.

Kennedy didn’t mention the wealth this war effort has brought to these self-same industrial leaders who influence public policy. Also he did not mention that most, if not all, of funds on Iraq and Afghanistan war is borrowed money.

Just a hunch, but I'm not sure this belongs in the Religion and Philosophy section, as it doesn't seem to pertain to either. Perhaps the Politics section is more suiting?

It is kind of interesting to watch the path a man takes, after foolishly not learning for the majority of his life, when suddenly he realizes there's more to like than get up, go to work, come home, read newspaper, watch Hee-Haw, go to bed, repeat four or five times, spend Sunday with annoying preachers and in-laws.

Unfortunately, I honestly think many people are just like that. They just never post here.

It's another book report; coberst read (but failed to understand) yet another work.

Hmm? Book Report? Great analogy DrK!

Maybe the trick to deciphering a Coberst thread is to relate to it in terms of Junior High School. So, maybe this one's the new-term equivalent of "How I Spent My Summer Vacation". That was the dreaded topic every uninspired and uninspiring English teacher always gave us the first week back in school in September. I can remember sitting through hundreds of these "And we went to Yankee Stadium when we were in New York...." recitals through the years.

So, it's September and Coberst is back in his little desk with Mrs. Hayes assigning the essay.

"And while non-thinking people were down at the seashore, I was reading Atlantic Magazine and browsing the Metaphysics stacks at the public library. Wouldn't it be neat if the other kids could just think like me and become valuable memebers of society?".....

And the rest of the kids would wait and beat the crap out of him after the final bell. Ah, the start of another year in the hallowed halls of education!:D

So what you're saying is that we need to increase our spending to WWII levels in order to win in Iraq and Afghanistan

What the author is saying and to which I agree is "war making was becoming too easy for American policy makers.”

What has that to do with the Religion and Philosophy subforum?

Shouldn't that be in Politics?

Hey! I love Hee-Haw! It's every bit as silly as Airplaneor Naked Gun.

...

No offense intended - I'm happy you like those things. For me, all three of those titles represent the worse excuse for lowbrow humor.

But, hey, it takes all kinds - I'm a huge Simpsons fan, and love Family Guy.
