Hillsborough Disaster:The truth at last

Two police forces are to pay damages to more than 600 people over a cover-up which followed the Hillsborough disaster, lawyers have said.

The South Yorkshire and West Midlands forces agreed the settlement earlier in 2021 following a civil claim.

Nobody has ever been convicted over police actions following the tragedy, in which 96 Liverpool fans died at the 1989 FA Cup semi-final.

A spokesman for Saunders Law, the lead solicitors for the group litigation, said the claim was started in 2015 and agreed in April.

It is so sad that no police officer will not accept any individual responsibility, but their respective forces will pay out compensation. The state is legally allowed to bribe people into going away. The taxpayer foots the bill. Not that I object to the families actually getting money, considering all they have spent trying to get justice.

Everybody is allowed to settle a claim out of court, as long as both parties agree. And the taxpayer foots the bill whenever the state is involved. Sometimes it's in the taxpayer's interest for the state to settle the claim, rather than take it to trial.

It's not clear to me from this blurb - were these officers found guilty of gross misconduct, or were they only accused of such?

Also, does the disciplining authority in question normally have jurisdiction over retired officers?

What often happens, is that the officers who have left the job and it is riled they would have been found guilty of misconduct, they get put onto a banned list, preventing them from doing any work with any police force. Retired cops often get civilian jobs.

Who maintains the banned list?

Not found guilty, not even brought before a disciplinary panel, just an assertion that were they not retired then they would have been. It is worth remenbering that those officers accused of criminal offences were tried and not found guilty, so there is no certainty that had they an opportunity to defend themselves that they would have been disciplined. This is scapegoating, they are named and blamed with no opportunity to defend themselves.

This does not mean I believe them to be innocent, but just that they have not had due process.

They didn't get due process because they lied about what happened for 25 years with the help of successive governments and by the time the truth came out they were all retired!

I thought the conclusion of inquiries was that there was NOT any collusion with national government.

That's only because, like with the Dublin and Monaghan bombings*, the state buried, burnt or threw overboard all evidence of collusion.

*An act of war carried out by a terrorist group whose membership list was almost indistinguishable from the UDR, an arm of the dtate.

Oh please, even if there wasn't formal collusion successive governments decided to just accept the police narrative, which let's remember was a complete lie.
You are both correct. The actual conspirators were the police and they didn't act in collusion with any government but governments ignored the calls for a public inquiry for decades despite there being clear evidence of a police conspiracy.
