Hillary Clinton wears Muslim hijab in Cairo

While touring Cairo, Hillary donned a hijab, a traditional Muslim head-dress which apparently has the purpose of hiding their appearance from lustful men. I found it pretty striking.

Is this part of the plan to win the Muslim's over with kindness? Is this support for their limited definition of women's rights and role in their society? Is it a sign that the new policy is to sacrifice American values, even in a small way, in the name of diplomacy?

I find it crass and insincere. People should respect each other's cultural differences. We don't expect Muslims to come over here and suddenly wear Western style dress.

Politicians have been wearing the garb of their hosts as a sign of respect since the dawn of time. I am sure there are foreign politicians that have come to the U.S. and put on a Yankees cap. Its just a sign of respect for your hosts historical and cultural traditions and was probably given to H.C. as a gift. It is not an endorsement of misogyny.

when I go to a Church..I take off my baseball cap, out of respect for traditional Christian custom. It doesn't make me less of a Jew.

The hijab's purpose in this case is concealment of female features, not respect for Allah.

All these customs are arbitrary. This is why I can't walk naked down Fifth Avenue. Unlike Hillary Clinton, I would be arrested for breaching this local cultural taboo.

In Britain (I don't know about the US) I could walk around topless. Women, not so much. I hope that you will join me in condemning this senseless oppression of women.

Considering that the hijab is not required by law in Egypt, I don't see a problem at all with wearing it there. In countries where it is required, I think it gets a bit more difficult. I would perhaps suggest complying, but avoiding any public photo-ops which could be construed as support for the policy.

There's been some protests recently in Sweden because some public baths don't allow women to go topless. Our ombudsman for sexual equality came to the conclusion that such bans are not illegal however, and must be fought by other means.
