I've tried. It hasn't worked. So, I'm done trying that. People don't want higher gas taxes, people don't like it, it never gets passed. Then why not agitate for higher taxes and retain the abilty to do something in the public interest with the money?
Sure, because production cost is a constant IRL.Are you particularly liking the bit about this "excess" income that people have earned going into the pockets of oil-rich governments and oil companies?
Shortsightedness allowed the demand to grow without any similar effects on the supply curve (in fact it's probably shifting left, thanks to increasing costs of production). Now that basic economics is rearing its head, why do you think that the money is going to lining the pockets of oil rich companies?
It's cost them an increasing amount to drill new oil wells, research new technologies, erect ocean rigs, explore new areas, map out new deposits, etc. Increasing cost of production, decreasing production, increasing demand, of COURSE the price goes up.
Yes, they're making a healthy profit, but I could have told you this would happen 8 years ago with the big SUV booms and increasing energy usage.
