Coooooool.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/alexknapp/2012/09/12/higgs-boson-discovery-has-been-confirmed/

Last July, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, commonly known as CERN, announced that it had finally discovered the elusive Higgs boson – or at least, a particle that matches the predictions of what the Higgs boson should look like. Now the organization has announced that its official findings have passed through the hurdle of peer review. Two papers describing the discovery have been published in the journal Physics Letters B.

Of course, passing muster with peer review isn’t the end of the story

<snip>

I’m willing to wager that there was a lot of checking and double checking going into the analysis of these papers.

Shouldn't there always be? :D Seriously though, I agree. They would not want to make a mistake on something this important.

You can read the two papers here and here.

Those 2 linked papers are entitled:

Observation of a new boson at a mass of 125 GeV with the CMS experiment at the LHC

and

Observation of a new particle in the search for the Standard Model Higgs boson with the ATLAS detector at the LHC

My internet is still downloading the massive list of names (credits) that each paper starts with and references that it ends with! :D (It'll be awhile before I attempt to read them.)

Here's the thread from July:

If this (confirmation of the discovery) does not deserve a thread in and of itself, please merge.

The papers have been officially accepted.

The experiments are not saying that they have definitely found the Higgs. In fact, even if you read the titles of the papers, it is only claimed that a boson was found that looks like the Higgs.

Personally, my money is on a Higgs. Time will tell us if this is indeed the SM Higgs. It could also be, for example, one of many Higgs that one would expect from some of the theories that expand on the Standard Model. Or, it could be something new altogether.

However you look at it, it is a very exciting discovery.

Yes, very exciting.

Also. I was just going with the Forbes headline. Their reasoning for saying it is "official" seems reasonable.

It is only official after the fat particle has sung at the Nobels.

Is it really super definitely the Higgs? Can't say.

Is it still totally cool there exists a "Higgs-like" particle in the mass range as predicted? Without a doubt.

And as we know, Bosons regularily dress up like one another so it's hard to tell at a glance.

So, finding the Higgs means we are close to coming up with the "Theory of Everything"?

Nope, finding the Higgs simply confirms the last missing piece of what's known as "The Standard Model of Quantum Mechanics", so we don't have to throw it out and start from scratch. A Theory of Everything will require merging the Standard Model with General Relativity, and possibly some other pieces that aren't covered by either theory.

Which I am sure MaGZ will correct you that Nationalist Socialist scientists did in May 1944

While they were perfecting the thermobosonic nuclear weapon. But dastardly Judaeo-Bolshevik agents stole the formula and sold it to Judaeo-Plutocratic conspirators in America, led by the evil genius Einstein ... or anyway, something like that.
