My metric is generally that if the entirety or majority of the quote/argument is designed not to further a point or present claims/evidence but to anger a specific group, then it's most likely trolling. I have seen nothing out of mhaze's arguments in this thread that support any actual willingness to engage in anything but punditry or riling up leftysergeant. There's also the telltale signs that you see so often in JREF trolls--bouncing rapidly from one topic to another so that it's too late to expect a response on one topic since the thread has moved on to another, making up of words/labels to anger the target, claiming victimhood, etc.

The subject is not a comparision to the right wing, nor a comparison to left wing Gaffes of the 57 States Variety. Neither is the subject the 15 meritorious topics of the Cain speech.

The subject is strictly construed by the OP to be the gaffe or possible gaffe, of Cain in the speech. Yet to simply point out that to stay on OP we must ignore meaningful content of said speech, is to be considered trolling. But I seek to stay on topic, and encourage the building of the lie for good Prog purposes, out of the slight or alleged gaffe.

And suggest useful methods, but know that exposing such methods is destructive.

Once again, attacking a poster is a misdirection. Why not go back to the job at hand, of building a nice big package of a lie based on a small irrelevant truth. It's a big job, and takes a lot of people to repeat something to make it seem true.

I don't know if it is "large", but it is significant. However, there are blacks in the GOP and some have achieved relatively high positions, like Michael Steele (who they eventually gave the boot). There are a few gays, though they tend to be encloseted. There are a few minorities, like Jindal, and lots of Jewish businessmen, But I cannot see Cain as making a dent in the Pale Ceiling of the GOP. He simply hasn't got the backing or the ideas. All he's got is a lot of money. That will carry you a long way in the GOP (as Donald Trump knows) but not to the top.

I credit a significant portion of Republicans with a desire to have a candidate that they believe is electable (along with having a tolerable ideology).

A black candidate may seem too transparent an "us too!" kind of play, or to others a transparent attempt to split off a portion of the votes Obama gets primarily for being black.

I think it would backfire with the (few) undecideds, and enough Republicans see that as likely that they would not wish to run a black candidate. Not because he/she is black per se, but because it would be too transparent a ploy and would render that candidate unelectable.

Although that constitutes a cynical view on race in general, I am not sure it qualifies as racism.

If any of us have mentioned race, it is because we see Cain as an unqualified schmuck (like most of the GOP, IMHO) who is only attracting attention right now because it looks as though the GOP is trying to make us look like racists for not forgiving his being an idiot because he happens to be black.

I dunno. A lot of Jews were suspicious of him even back in 2008. Some of them may have even fallen for the slurs about his middle name. However, the killing of OBL, while not as important to Jews as it is to Americans, showed a lot of them that he is not a "closet Muslim". So it's probably a wash there.

As for blacks, undoubtedly there were a number of blacks who are disappointed that Obama is not pushing their agendas and he may lose a few of them. I doubt many of those are going to swing Republican though, given that certain wings of the GOP have done everything they could to paint the party as racist. So again, a wash.

The independants may decide who wins the final rounds, but the base plays a very big role in who makes it to the final rounds. I will be very very surprised if Cain is more than a curiosity in the primaries. I hope I'm proved wrong.

That's only an issue for the extreme right. Even moderate Republicans recognize that Obama has not been kissing up to Muslims and that they won't be able to make that an issue in the general election.

I think they probably will anyway. Hard to say how the primary season will go though. Little things make a big difference. Events that happen two weeks before a vote are much more important to the outcome than anything that happens now, or in the last two years. That's just American Politics.

I really don't think any measurable number of black voters would vote for Cain "just because he's black". Certainly not enough to split the vote. After all Obama's wasn't the first to run but the one with broadest appeal. You'll find most who voted for him thought he was the best candidate.

The problem with this thinking is that nobody voted for Obama. They voted for a manufactured image of a candidate. Now people know the sour attitude, thin skin and shallow thinking of the actual person, whom quite unfortunately for the country has not grown into the job. These factors are not good in the re election process.

I refer to the recent speech where Obaby advocated a return to 1967 borders for Israel. That cannot do anything but lose him a big section of the Jewish vote.

But what is that base right now? I'm not sure anyone knows, part is the traditional base, part is the religious right, part is that sort of outside influence from the Tea Party.
