Here Comes Huckabee on the Outside!

Matt Drudge is claiming that the Democrats are intentionally holding their fire against Huckabee, because they sense he will be the easiest for them to beat:

Democrat party officials are avoiding any and all criticism of Republican presidential contender Mike Huckabee, insiders reveal.

The Democratic National Committee has told staffers to hold all fire, until he secures the party's nomination.

The directive has come down from the highest levels within the party, according to a top source.

Within the DNC, Huckabee is known as the "glass jaw -- and they're just waiting to break it."

I think the poll out today that shows Huckabee losing worst of any of the Republican candidates just reflects him being a relative unknown. But he will be easy to caricature:

"His letting out murderers because they shout 'Jesus', his wanting to put 300,000 AIDS patients and Magic Johnson into isolation, ain't even scratching the surface of what we've got on him."

Well, I see most of the liberals here are still overconfident at their chances at the White House.

I think the Dem candidates are more flawed and may have a hard time getting elected. Edwards is a lightweight, Obama is a nice speaking run of the mill liberal and Hillary is one most polarizing figure in politics.

Personally, I think the Republican candidate will be favored over the Dem candidate. Check out the Electoral College.

And could some of you overconfident liberals tell me which states the Dems are going to win that they didn't last time that is going to create this easy victory?

If one assumes that the Democrats retain every state they did in 2004 and counts every state with a 2% or less Bush margin as a swing state:

Ohio (20)
Iowa (7)
Nevada (5)
New Mexico (5)

Add in 2-4.9% margin states as swing states:

Florida (27)
Virginia (13)
Missouri (11)
Colorado (9)
Arkansas (6)

It would be foolish for us Democrats to measure our chances of winning 11 months before the election, but the increasing cries of frustration from the GOP camp cannot be ignored.

Personally, I think the Republican candidate will be favored over the Dem candidate.

Can I borrow your magic 8-ball when you are finished?

Right now, I think the democrats chances are better, but of course things could change in the next 10 months.

Bush is very unpopular and that's going to rub off on the Republican nominee.

In Ohio's 2006 election they elected Democrats by a wide margin. It was a Republican bloodbath in the state. We'll see if that carries over into 2008 or not.

I think that's probably true. Huckabee plays well with religious fundies (which is why he is going to get creamed in New Hampshire) but not with the majority of the nation. While the religious right is a core constituency with the Republican party, it is not by any means their only constituency, and many of them are quite leery of a charismatic bible-thumper. Meanwhile, Democrats will throng to vote against him and undecideds probably won't trust him either, having seen how Bush II used religion as a decision tool.

So yeah, the Dems are quietly cheering for Huckabee to make a big showing. True, he probably won't win the nomination, but since his fundie base tends to be very vindictive, a significant number of them will simply refuse to vote rather than voting for one of the candidates that Huckabee has put in the "unclean" hopper. The only thing that would be better for the Dems would be if Huckabee ran as a third-party candidate.

I don't think he has the dough for that, unless Bloomberg finances him.

No, probably not, but I can dream, can't I? But LawnOven makes a good point. Huckabee might make an ideal running mate. The Cheney Vice Presidency has shown that a good VP choice can round up those extremist voters while not scaring people too badly.

What if someone picks Huckabee as a running mate?

That just might be a smart move. I can't immediately think of a more obvious choice. And considering that Huckabee was a second-tier candidate unable to raise much money until December, winding up on the ticket as veep should be a pretty good consolation prize.

I found it amusing to read that one Iowan pastor was undecided about Huckabee for "endorsing “God and rock ’n’ roll at the same time”," which he considered a "fatal flaw" (in the end he voted for Huckabee anyway). It hadn't occurred to me that in this day and age there are still people who see rock ’n’ roll as some evil instrument of the devil.

Why should that suprise you? They still know that the bible is the literal truth after all.

Meh. If we liked George Bush, Huckabee is all the calories and twice the caffeine.

I saw Huckabee on Bill Maher, like a year ago or something before anyone had ever heard of him or knew he was running for president. I knew he was going to be popular among that certain special segment of the American population. I thought "Man, this is the guy they have been waiting for".

McCain and Romney will never pick Huckabee as VP; he is not part of the Republican Establishment. If McCain or Romney gets the nomination look for them to pick Connie Rice.

I think that if they think it will help them win, they would pick him for cynical political reasons. After all, veeps can be ignored.

Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake.

Um, yeah. I've grown to really trust the Democrats' judgment in these things.
Just like in 2004, when they were saying: "Bush? No problem. Nobody'll vote for that nut again!"
