Help TalkOrigins bid for rights to "Expelled"

200K? That's more than I expected.

So that's 200K that goes to paying back Premise Media's "creditors". I wonder if it's possible to get a list of creditors? If it's stuff like "Ken Ham, scientific consultant, $100K" and "Discovery Institute, loan repayment, $50K" I will be annoyed. (But I guess typically it's a bunch of film-industry service suppliers, banks, credit cards, etc..)

Here's hoping TalkOrigins was the top bid.

#EDIT: Never mind. Seems they were not to top bidder.

Bummer.

My bet is Ben Stein bought it himself to avoid being made to look even more ridiculous than he already does.

... Actually, that's a very good point. But how are his finances? I'd imagine they'd be pretty poor. Wasn't this the same Ben Stein that claimed there was no housing bubble? And has been wrong far more often than right whenever he made claims on TV about finances?

... why does network TV even bring him on, anyway? Near as I can tell, he's an expert only in appearing to be intelligent on TV.

He's made a bundle in the past, though I've no idea if he's managed to hold on to it. I think I might have found out why he was Expelled, though:

Ben Stein said:
I was never a hippie in the sense that I always worked; in that sense you can't be a hippie. But I was also a pot smoker for part of that time. I had long hair, I went around in fatigues and had lots of "romantic experiences" that a more cautious person might not have had. Yeah, I had a hippie lifestyle. I lived in the forests of Santa Cruz while I was a teacher there, in 1972-73. That was sort of my ultimate hippie days.

Who'd have thunk it?

UD is claiming "Walt Ruloff and associates" as the winning bidder.

"Update, just in: Walt Ruloff and his associates, who were the original producers of EXPELLED, won the auction. More later."

I haven't been able to find this reported anywhere else, so consider the source and take it for what it's worth

How does that work? The production company went bankrupt so they auctioned off the rights to the movie and the original producers won? It sounds like they won their own auction. Were they bidding on it to drive up the price and got caught?

Probably not. I've been around a couple of business bankruptcy auctions. The seller is actually the creditors so there is nothing to stop the former owner from bidding with personal funds to pick up a bargain on property that they used to own. AFAIK it doesn't really matter to the bankrupt person if the auction raises $1 or $1,000,000.

It would've been too weird for TO to own Expelled. I'm content to know that it remains the same odiferous crust of apology on the shoe of creationism it always was.

On the plus side, Walt Ruloff has had to fork out a large sum of money just to stop the film falling into the hands of his enemies. I find that appealing.
