Help debunking friend's ghost story

I thought Christians--at least Biblical literalists--don't believe in the occult. Charismatics believe in demons, but from what I understand, these are supposed to operate within people in order to make them do various things. (Example: "I've been fighting demons that have made me attracted to other men.")

If Christians don't believe in demons, they have wasted a lot of energy over many centuries on exorcisms.

Please see the last 2 sentences of the post you quoted. Charismatics are a Christian sect, which is why I cited them as an exception. As I said, I thought demons operated differently from ghosts, i.e. operating from the inside.

Maybe the OP's friend is an exception, as the poster above me said.

Im not sure what brand of Christianity he is associated with. I do know my Catholic relatives believe in all sorts of entities, from ghosts to demons and everything else...

Thanks for the additional responses, folks--my friend has been strangely quiet on this since I pointed out some more of the possible explanations that have been mentioned here.

On thing to clarify--the disappearing book occurred supposedly while he was in the process of reading with his daughter, so the book was right there in front of him--unlikely it is a case of being misplaced. I got the impression he saw it, turned for an instant and then it was gone. Now, that could be a case of 1) faulty memory 2) exaggeration on his part 3) trickery on the part of other people ion the household...or numerous other possible scenarios. But the misplacement idea seems unlikely, if you take his story at face value.

Thanks again!

Misplace mentioned still works. How often have you been using something, set it down, and turned back to find it is not where you thought it was?
