Thanks to Alice Shortcake, I have found this goldmine of a thread. Once I've made it through Mr Boden's book, I'll see if I can add anything to the party.

Oh dear, I was a little slow on the uptake and didn't realise this chap's book was priced at $16.99. Seems a bit steep, particularly as it looks to be full of copyrighted images.

Anyone fancy a whip-round for a forum copy?

ETA: Correction. I think he should comp one to Alice Shortcake for the superb job she did, without so much as a thank you from the subject in question.

Methinks the o/p protest too much about serious researchers. Alice Shortcake mus have left him faint. Or he has the fingers in ears, lalala stance going on.

$16.99 equals a nice bottle of vodka. I'm skeptical about the book.

Seriously though, Charles has said elsewhere that he spent almost twenty years researching his book. I'd love to know if the quality of his historical research matches that of his genealogical work, because if it does "Descendant of Kings" may well be comedy gold. The sub-Dan Brown flavour of the extracts he's posted so far, together with the fact that we're dealing with a man who fantasizes about Flora McDonald's hats, raises my hopes to the nth degree. Alas, the trouble with self-published books is that the publisher is unlikely to hand out review copies. :(
 
Well, for my money, I've read MUCH worse gothic novels than Charles'... except those novels are actually billed as fiction...

I'm willing to go in on the book with a few bux if Big Les agrees to read it and share the best excerpts. Someone start a King Charles Boden pay pal and I'll contribute.
 
I'll mail someone a couple of bucks for reporting highlights but I can't use my credit card for literature on PayPal. I've had the same credit card since college and the last time I used it to buy literature that didn't have a spanking motif (it was to impress a girl:rolleyes:) the darn credit card company kept calling me insisting someone had stolen my card and was buying high falootin' literature on my dime. (Now that I think about it, Charles' work may fall into what the credit card company considers porn saving me the embarrassing phone calls about card theft.)

I'm in (for a couple of bucks).
