Hard drive recorder and div x player

Unless you buy imported DVDs, multi-region will do nothing for you.

OK, I shall need to read extensive reviews and customer experiences of said machine (Toshiba SD24) :)

Hmmm . .not only are there no reviews, I have been unable to find any customer feedback on this machine whatsoever. Still, Toshiba is an ok make, and it has commercial skip!

Usually DVD players cannot be hacked to make them region free. I would pay the extra and get the region free one. For Americans it makes no real difference, but for Europeans it is a nice feature to have. Not only are many DVDs available in the US long before they are released in Europe, but often times it is cheaper to get them shipped from the US or Canada than it is to buy them locally.

In the stores I have been in they have offered to hack it for me, for free or for a minor sum. For this player they wanted more money but I didnt want to pay and I couldn't persuade them so I didnt bother. I felt it was unlikely that I would want to pay the premium shipping or that the titles I would want would only be available in other regions.

Does having a multi region player have any consequences for being able to play downloaded stuff??

No, only if you are dead set on seeing that obscure movie only released in the US and doing it legally. Ripped/hacked/pirated movies have no copyright protection left on them. For a dedicated movie-lover multiregion might be nice since you might like the version released elsewhere to be better from a technical view, better extra material and sound etc.
