Halloween is the Best-Damn Holiday EVER!!!

I've discovered that handing out the candy is way cool. It lets you reconnect with your youth and is a good way to meet single moms.

A couple of years ago a girl, who couldn't have been more than 13-14, flashed me! This freaked me out, because of what it might make people think, until a friend came by and said, "some eighth grade girl is flashing people. So keep an eye out." Making me realize she was doing it to everyone and I relaxed.....until I started thinking about what might happen to the girl if she did that to the wrong person. Thankfully it turned out to be a non-event.

Drunken sex is WAY overrated. If any sex I've had can ever be classified as "bad" (and really, it can't) then it's the sex I've had while drunk.

yeah, but given the choice between drunken sex and sober abstinence, I think most people will choose drunken sex every time.

Drinking --> lower inhibitions --> more likely to have sex

Not for everyone. Most gals I've been around who were inebriated just get really mean. While they're polite sober they get a few drinks in them and then it's just nothing but, "get the hell away from me, dork!"

Yes, they actually use the word, "dork."

Of course on Monday they have no memory of it and want to know why you're no longer talking to them.

What don't you get? This holiday has everything, candy and fun costumes for kids, wholesome family activities like carving pumpkins, unwholesome activities like drunken debauchery for adults, even staying in and doing nothing for the sourpuss crowd. (You just make sure that any outside lights are off and nobody bothers you.) It also has no current connection to religion (except the fairly recent, "This is the devil's day!" garbage.)

Seconded. My culture has nothing like Halloween. We celebrate a very sombre All Saints Day at the same time by visiting the graves of dead family members and lighting windproofed candles. A kind of "Memento Mori"-weekend. I can see the point of spending silent contemplation on those you miss, sure, but we already do that all year round, teutonic depressives as we are.

Above all Halloween is a holiday with few "musts". You'll likely not have to go anywhere or arrange a family dinner. You don't Martha Stewart your home and bend over backwards to keep up with the joneses in "tasteful" decorating. If we don't want to, we can skip it - there's no preassure. If you like, all you have to do is stock up on sweets, rent the entire shelf of horror flicks from your local Lacklustre and cement your bum to the sofa - OR you can go whole hog and arrange a huge party and an elaborate costume and party like it's Samhain.

And pumpkins are nice, and kittehs are nice and... and...

For Halloween this year, I'll be playing center stage at a huge warehouse party in Downtown Denver...It's gonna be the Bee's Bullocks!!! The Dogs Knees!!! The Cat's Pajama's!!! The Khepris' New Crobuzon!!!

I'm so big about Halloween that I actually take over one of the physics labs at my school for three days with The Haunted Physics Lab.

Me and the other two physics teachers take turns - each gets one day - to have all of our classes cycle through the lab, where they explore a variety of creepy & weird demonstrations that go through some of the more esoteric physics concepts we'll be covering in the course of the year. The students are encouraged to play around with the equipment, take notes, ask/answer questions, solve puzzles, and generally play while exploring different areas of physics. I also take the opportunity to put together some demos debunking various woo, such as Ouija boards, pareidolia, and (new this year) "ghost detectors".

The Haunted Lab is a huge hit every year, hundreds of physics students go through it an many more non-physics kids drop by during free periods, lunch,
or with other teachers who want to give their kids a little treat. It's not uncommon for some staff members, including the senior administration (principle and even superintendent) to come by for a visit.

The downside: it is a HUGE pain in the ass to set up and maintain. It's not uncommon for me to easily put in about 8 hours worth of work in setting it all up, even though the vast majority of the material & equipment is already in
:boggled:my room somewhere. So, to make my life a bit more sane, the day before I take my class to the Lab, I show them Randi's "Secrets of the Psychics" video (with a notesheet) so that I can gather equipment, quietly check things in the back of the room, and generally get prepped. I don't usually like to show hour-long videos in class, but that one is a must see, and what better time of the year to do it?

I LOVE Halloween :D

*tips his hat*

Well done, sir. Well done.

As a fellow acknowledger of Halloween being the greatest day of the year, your dedication is admirable.

I personally occupy my October (and sometimes a good portion of my September) spending way too much time and money hunting down components of costumes that very few people will recognize.

My greatest triumphs to date include Lemmy Kilmeister from Motorhead, teaming up with two friends to portray Spinal Tap, and H.I. McDunnough from "Raising Arizona".

This year will prove to be my most elaborate, most expensive, and most esoteric costume yet. I will be the character depicted in my avatar: Dr. Rockzo the Rock and Roll Clown.

I'm going to two parties Halloween weekend, and I doubt anyone will know who I'm supposed to be. But the point is, I will be running around in clown make-up and a bright green bodysuit with a cut-out exposing most of my torso, screaming "I do cocaine!".

And if that isn't the embodiment of the Halloween spirit, I don't know what is.

Do your students know you talk like this, Mr. High School Teacher? :p

Halloween is a magical holiday for adults and children alike- when it is done right. What a great and timeless holiday- when it's done right.

How do you do it wrong? What is magical about it? What was wrong with the way the OP was typing?
You think high school kids don't use the term kick ass?

Depends on how drunk. If we are 'having a good time drunk' it can be very pleasant. If it's 'I cannot walk on large flat surfaces without a high chance of falling' drunk, yeah, that can suck a lot.

I'm beginning to think that it would have been easier to make my costume this year out of metal rather than plastic.

Fortunately, my avatar is perfect for this time of year. His Majesty, Dhich’uné Tlakoáni, 33rd Seal Emperor of Tsolyánu, "The Eternal Splendor," would not have it any other way... lest you want to find yourself sacrificed on the altar of Lord Sárku!

Otuléngba! All Hail!

It's a fine line between pleasure and pain.

Got a new fog machine tonight and set it up out in front of the house... it gives a nice, extra creepy effect to the graveyard :)
