Half of Obamacare call center jobs will be part time

Earlier this year, Contra Costa County (in the Bay Area, not far from where I live) won a contract to run a call center to answer questions about the Affordable Care Act. Here's the detail that the job postings advertising a full time job failed to mention: half the positions are part time, with no benefits, including health care.

How's that hopey-changey stuff been working out for ya?

Aren't you the one who keeps whining about wanting the government to spend less money. Then when they do you whine. Face it skeptic, you care little about anything other then bashing Obama.

Ah, isn't the cute...

and infantile.

Edit - It's pretty pathetic when people see 200+ jobs created and still figure out a way to bitch about Obama. Despite how low my expectations are for intellectual discourse from conservatives, they still can't meet them.

It's no wonder conservatives are the dinosaurs of 21st century.

When I was in grad school, at one point I desperately was in need of money, and I quickly found a job selling newspaper subscriptions over the phone, and at the same time I was a radio announcer for a few hours a day. Jobs paid about $2.00 an hour, but it put food on the table. And I had a blast at both jobs and managed to complete grad school.

Now, as for Sarah Palin fans, I'm afraid I don't enjoy their outloook. Sorry.

The article seems to contradict you:

"Unions nearly derailed the project before some last-minute wrangling to ensure workers weren't transferred needlessly and would receive appropriate benefits."

Don't worry. I'm sure he'll make up for it with those "millions of green jobs" he promised. <Er, ehem.> Sorry, just had to wipe tears of laughter from my eyes.

Conservative whining is at its best when Sarah Palin is quoted.

I've noticed many times that "conservative" means not agreeing with particular politicians. It's about people rather than policy and frankly, it's cultlike.

Doesn't that mean that half the positions are full-time?

Doesn't sound so horrible to me.

Just curious about something, I'm not so up to snuff on this, but isn't the whole point of Obamacare a way to avoid your health insurance being attached to your job? Doesn't the coverage apply anyway? Or are you talking about setting up Obamacare and at that point it not being applicable to these employees?

Love this detail:

Those who became part-time were told they would have to pay full freight on their health plans, ranging from $600 to $1,200 a month for a single worker and between $1,400 to $2,900 a month for an employee with a family. That is a steep bill for employees with part-time jobs paying from $15.33 to $18.63 an hour.

Affordable care indeed!

I see your point, but no, the ACA is not about dettaching insurance from jobs, because it includes a mandate for employers with at least 50 employees to provide insurance. The ACA did not create a single payer system where everyone gets an insurance card they keep regardless of their job.

But yes, many of the provisions of the ACA are directed toward people who can't get insurance through their employer.

Who were they told this by, I wonder?

Under the ACA people making up to 400 percent of the federal poverty line are eligible for subsidies such that they spend no more than 9.5% of their income (and that's the highest tier--350 to 400% of FPL) on premiums.

As for the individual mandate (the tax penalty) people who would need to pay more than 8% of their income for a premium are exempt from the mandate.

There simply won't be any people whose only income is this part time job that will have to pay those kinds of premiums for health insurance.

ETA: I suspect maybe part-timers are offered a group plan with no employer contribution, but certainly no one told them they have to take it.

So, first people complain about how "Obamacare" is "socialism", then they complain that it isn't socialist enough to be directly employing people, full-time, with paid benefits, using taxpayer money?

Sounds like Bachmann's "Some lady told me the HPV vaccine causes mental retardation." This reporter is at best a hack for not attributing his quotes, and at worst spreading false information just to make some political point or sensationalize his article.

It's real easy to get real information on Affordable Care Act. Just google it and at least read the Wiki entry before spreading nonsense. My suggestion to those who are against this health care plan, don't buy it. And don't cash the checks that many are getting from their insurance companies which the act mandates for their having over charged you. By all means just cling to Palinesque blatherings and feel secure in your ignorance and tribal hate of Obama.

Liberals?

I guess that's an attempt at humor or something, but it makes no sense.

You're asking whether liberals are the ones who criticize Obamacare because it's "socialism" or "the government takeover of healthcare" and then turn around and criticize Obamacare for not creating enough government jobs?

Or did you just read nothing but the word "deluded" and think you were making a witty response?

and they don't even recognize the hypocrisy. Truly deluded people.

The hypocrisy is in ignoring that the so-called "Affordable" Care Act has created such perverse incentives to reduce workers' hours and wages that even the government's propaganda machine is unable to resist.

Similar "do as we say, not as we do" policies from Washington include calling for minimum wage hikes while many DC interns are paid $7.25 per hour below the federal minimum wage (i.e. $0.00 per hour).
