Haitian earthquake was used as an excuse for US invasion

The Haitian humanitarian response seems to have been characterised by an obsession with security and the massive deployment of US troops. In reality there has been very little looting considering how desperate the people must be. It took almost a week before any significant supplies reached civilians despite the aid being stacked high at the airport. Where they trying to provoke such a response to justify large numbers of troops, whilst using the poor infrastructure as an excuse for the slow deployment? Bear in mind Haiti is 200 miles off the Guantanamo base with its supplies and considerable earth moving equipment

Doctor Evan Lyon, of Partners in Health, a medical aid group famous for its heroic efforts in Haiti, referred to "misinformation and rumours ... and racism" concerning security issues.

We've been circulating throughout the city until 2:00 and 3:00 in the morning every night, evacuating patients, moving materials. There's no UN guards. There's no U.S. military presence. There's no Haitian police presence. And there's also no violence. There is no insecurity."...

Yet Lt. General P.K. Keen, deputy commander of the U.S. Southern Command, reports that there is less violence in Haiti now than there was before the earthquake hit....

To understand the United States government's obsession with "security concerns," we must look at the recent history of Washington's involvement there.......

Aristide's first democratic government was overthrown after just seven months in 1991, by military officers and death squads later discovered to be in the pay of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency. Now Aristide wants to return to his country, something that the majority of Haitians have demanded since his overthrow. But the United States does not want him there. And the Preval government, which is completely beholden to Washington, has decided that Aristide's party - the largest in Haiti - will not be allowed to compete in the next elections (originally scheduled for next month).

Washington's fear of democracy in Haiti may explain why the United States is now sending 10,000 troops and prioritizing "security" over other needs.

In short, has the earthquake been used as a cover for a de-facto US invasion of the country to secure trade liberalisation, and prevent a left wing government under the popular Aristide getting back into power?

Oh, joy Pilger. The same guy who said saddam was a good guy as well as Milosevic not being so bad.

From the list that Drudge posted,Weisbrot is another Euro Lefty who has a love affair with Chavez, I see. In fact, I note he seems to have a love affair with Marxist Governments in general.
And Pilger just plain hates not just the US, but the West in General.
Maybe the US should have stood back and did nothing. Nah, the "Neo Coms" would have blasted us for that as well.
ANd this thread belongs in Politics anyway.
Interesting how people with an political agenda tend to put threads in section where they do not belong.

I see the Loony Left is still hard at work spinning this tragedy to their advantage, using the pain and suffering of the Haïtians for their own political goals.

Busy little bees.

Disgusting.

It's like with truthers. We've been discussing this for over a week in the other thread, and now we're back to square one, as if nothing happened, as if nothing had been said.

Same old rubbish, different poster.

Oh darn, and we would have gotten away with it too if it hadn't been for those darn kids.

The CTers have figured it out - the US caused the Haiti earthquake in order to take the country over, because...we gain so much from taking over one of the poorest countries in the hemisphere that has absolutely 0 strategic value to the country.

Whats next, are we going to cause earthquakes in Kenya?

The "reason" for the Invasion is so the US has a puppet government that will allow the US to build a Naval Base to replace Guantanimo when we are forced out of there.
That Haiti does not have a particularly desirable harbor for a Naval Base seems to pass them by.

Not to mention the other silly facts they overlooked on that one, like the fact that the country would have more than happy to have a US base on their soil given the amount of economic development such bases generate in third world countries. So instead of causing a earthquake with our space weapons and then paying for all the repairs to build a base, we could have just asked :D

I guess we have to understand them. After losing the Cold War, the internet is the last place these kooks feel empowered, because in the real world it's not working so much.

Now they're just like any other cult, trying to talk louder and make as much noise as the others.

You know i tend to agree, from what i hear after they take Haiti they are going to take something with much more value, my sock drawer.

This spinning tears into gold bs has to stop, i have said it before and i have said it again, the man who stands to profit is the bad guy, hands down. All of these conspiracy theorists would have 0 dollars and 0 cents without national tragedy. While the debunkers would be doing something more useful with our lives than trying to deal with them.

forced out by. . . ?

(Yawn) it's going to be the usual situation: the USA doing massive good, saving lives, reconstructing the place, while the whining conspiracy theorists whine, "imperialism! propaganda!", blah blah. Of course, if the USA did not help Haiti, they would be whining, too: "USA doesn't care about black people! Racism! Bigotry!", blah blah.

Yes. We Americans are uniformly evil.

Next question.
