Conservatives/NRA types think everyone should be able to have and use guns, even minors and small children. They argue that with proper training and education, paired with guidance and supervision, that even a small child can handle gun use responsibility.

Aside from small children, direct supervision and active participation, why don't conservatives get that the same argument can be used for birth control and sex education? With proper education, guidance and discussion, minors can be informed about the good and bad aspects of sex, learn to handle it responsibly, know what is right in terms of safety and consent, and avoid more pregnancies and disease spreading.

Simple. Sex sends you to Hell. Guns let you send other people to Hell.

I've wondered that many a time. What I determined was that those people (and the people who prefer sex to guns) are hypocrites.

Except that in the real world, there have been massive amounts of money spent on just such education...AIDS and teen pregnancy etc. still abound, not because the truth is locked away by conservatives, but because it is trivialized by peers and the media.

Look at the successful campaign waged to eradicate contagious disease in the last part of the 20th century..and now those diseases are roaring back with a vengeance...because people were kept from having immunizations, or kept ignorant of their availability?

Not at all...in spite of widespread, almost universal educational and immunization programs, diseases like TB are in full bloom, while people try to figure out ways to sneak their kids into the public schools without the mandatory shots.

As long as the parents, peers, and the media glorify teen sex, *and* violence, and ridicule self control and doing the boring, safe, sensible thing, such education programs are always going to face an uphill battle.

Doesn't mean that they shouldn't be used, or that we shouldn't be taking lessons from the kids who *do* make safe choices, it just means that there aren't so many easy answers.
 
The anti-gun crowd behaves the same way. You dont see them asking the NRA to do gun saftey talks in school. Its like they dont want kids to know that guns exist!! Were at a point that its taboo to give a toy gun as a gift.

You would think that if you're anti-gun that you would want to teach children just how dangerous they are, and how not to handle a weapon.
 
Next you'll suggest that we try to remove the guilt from sexual pleasure that the various Christian religeons have been instilling for years.

Because it promotes a libertine lifestyle, and like most accomplished men, I won't give the time of day to a woman who has been slutting around her whole life and now wants to find Mr Right. Where was she 10 years ago? Catching herpes and smoking pot every weekend. It's not suspicion, the lines on her face prove it along with her medical recods, which I now have HIPAA-compliant access to.

That's why. She can marry someone three-steps down from sweet wonderful me, since I wasn't worth talking to until she turned 30, all because the media and public schools taught her "debauchery isn't bad, as long as you use a condom and take the pill!"

That's because you are gay.

Consider, Jocelyn Elders got fired for advocating masturbation - name a cabinet appointee who ever got fired for advocating gun use? Nearly everyone will have sex, insert your joke here yeah whatever, but relatively few people will own or use a gun in their lifetimes. That's why such education is necessary.

But actually, I was talking about what conservatives think about the two subjects. I have heard far more conservative arguments for the 'right to bear arms' part of the Second than I have conservative arguments for advocating sex education.
 
My understanding is that Elders did not so much advocate it as suggest that it will not send one to hell.

While I certainly agree that the conservatives are way too uptight about sexually in general, I have to object to your analogy. I have taught my teens how to shoot, and about relationships/sexuality. While I will always be around while they shoot guns, I certainly can not be around all the time when they get around to interacting with the opposite sex, unless I keep them in the house until they are 18. :)

Ok you got me. yes, it is possible that my kids might get access to the safe while I am not at home, but they are not that untrustworthy. It is also possible that they may be out shooting with another adult, but not likely. What they do when they become adults is their business.

I'm quite sure you knew what the hell I was talking about. :)
