Merged Gulf oil spill more serious than reported

The same professionals that allowed this to happen because of their gross mismanagement and slavish devotion to profit over safety? Yah, OK...

No, you're referring to the business ***holes who made those stupid decisions. I'm talking about the scientists & engineers attempting to fix the mess that they created.

Now I suggest you go retrieve that baby you just tossed out with the bathwater.

The same professionals that allowed this to happen because of their gross mismanagement and slavish devotion to profit over safety? Yah, OK...

Every one makes mistakes, every day, in many ways. A typo, switching i and e, making a left turn instead of a right. Having a couple of drinks on the way home. Not checking the air in their tires, or the oil level in the pan. Hitting that hill on the west-bound road at the absolute wrong time, sun-wise. People can get hurt, or even die, from some seemingly innocent decision you made.
The problem is, when engineers make the wrong decision, even based on their experience and best practices, things can go South in a big way, rapidly.
One of the things I try to guard against, myself, is complacency. Just because you've had it work before, even numerous times, does not mean you haven't actually gotten away with something if one variable had been slightly different.

Why do people always moronically forget that those same professionals are licensed in a manner that if the gross insane conspiracy mongering happened to be true would lead them to be arrested for manslaughter and sent to jail....

Oh, and Without Rights says that it will wash out with the rain and contaminate everything. H2S, reacting with water, produces H2SO4, sulfuric acid, which is not a good thing to be bathing in, but from parts per billion concentrations of the gas you get parts per billion solution.

As I understand it, that is incorrect. Sulphur Trioxide, SO3, makes H2SO4 with water. H2S does make a weak acid according to Wikipedia, but not sulphuric. :)

This could be a major problem downwind from a 24/7/365 H2S source (in fact, some Yellowstone trees suffer from it, if I remember rightly), but it is not a people killer.

[NITPICK]
I HATE when people do that!!!:(

It should be 24/365 or 24/7/52 (multiply it out).

--

Better, IMHO, to stick with 24/7 (which translates to "at all times") than to enhance the expression in a way that makes one appear innumerate.

This was not personally at you, shad, just at the thoughtlessness that many people exhibit in formulating cliches. :):) [/NITPICK]

Cheers,

Dave

I take it bit pattern knows someone better to go to for solutions to this highly complicated and sophisticated problem.

Nah, just keep listening to the creepy voices in your head, since they've served you well thus far

That's good. Dodge a question and attack the man all in the same meaningless comment. Way to go.

I thought Ad hominem was against the rules here, or is ok as long a "skeptic" is doing it?

No, I was just having fun at your expense. I admit it.

To answer your question seriously, of course you shouldn't listen to BP for all your info (duh). That's why we have the feds & various groups of independent scientists working on the issue as well.

You have to do what the rest of us do: take it all in and attempt to make sense of it.

Happy now? :)

Yeah, I'm dying to know where that is too... in Super-Fantastic Magical Fantasy Land, perhaps?

No, I recommend paying more attention to professionals who actually know what they're talking about versus the vast majority of the news media who seem only to be interested in sensationalizing the story as much as possible.

That really makes no sense. If I am only listening to the media then I wouldn't be concerned over benzene and h2s because as far as I know they haven't mentioned it.

But some people think ranting mindlessly is fun... okay fine.

What is this form of douchebaggery? Since sentences seem to be stumping you I'll break it down again just for you.

Benzene=toxic (so says the professionals)
oil spill=benzene (so says the EPA)
strong wind=toxic landfall (so says levels tested in Venice)

I'm not really planning on a true response from you anymore. I can see what's coming already. Ignore everything I say and insult me. Such as your "Nigeria is worse than the Gulf" argument. I gave you the real numbers and you ignore them, avoiding a intelligent debate in favor of insults. I know, it's way easier to just declare your right. Unfortunately I would rather have a "big boy" conversation so run off and go play.

Actually, you haven't been having a mature conversation with anyone so far on this thread. Your loss, I suppose, as there really are a lot of people on these Forums who know what they're talking about.

Earlier you posted,
..The EPA says these short terms when levels go way up are not a concern but they are lying.

So your real numbers come from the EPA - but the EPA lies.

Please make up your mind.

The difference between my rips and yours is that mine include an argument and then a burn. All your response includes is an insult and an attempt to make my real arguments sound absurd without actually proving it. And now that I pointed it out I get more childish behavior. I mean, you look ooooold, but you sound like a 13 year old.

I bet if Corporations, the media and the Government told you it is safe to eat crude with your frosted flakes you would dig in.

There is no contradiction there so don't get excited. The numbers were tested and the real numbers released. The lie is that a few days spent sucking in 1100 ppb of h2s is nothing to worry about. It's all in the context.

Sounds like the strategy of a dolt. Perhaps you would also like to cover your ears and start yelling La-La-La.

Not really necessary, as I don't find it difficult not to dwell on things I can't control.

If I did, I might worry about:

1. a killer asteroid that could hit us at any time,
2. a solar flare that could wipe out the power grid and with it, civilization as we know it,
3. eruption of the super-volcano at Yellowstone which would devastate the continental US,
4. collapse of the fragile levee system in California, which would result in the entire southern part of the state becoming uninhabitable,
5. climate change turning the Amazon basin into a desert,
6. Etc., etc.

There are many things we could choose to obsess over, if that is how we want to spend the paltry number of years we have on Earth. I prefer to focus on things I can do something about.

"While H2S is associated with oil and natural gas extraction, it also comes from marshes and sewage treatment plants. Because H2S has only been seen at individual monitors on an infrequent basis, this indicates the H2S is more likely from a local source near the monitor rather than from the oil spill. We do not know the exact source of H2S in these areas."

What is the difference between all these and the oil spill? All the threats you listed might possibly happen while the oil spill has happened. I don't worry about robbers with guns all the time, but if a gun is put in my face, it's time to worry. The oil spill is an imminent threat and there has never been a better time to worry about it. If you don't care to hear any thing about the real dangers of the oil spill then I suggest you go to Disney. com and smile away in your comfort zone. Why are you even here?

Now I'm obsessing. Wow. There is no limit to the absurdity. Curious, what are the great things you are doing with your time that are more important than the lives of thousands of Americans? Is it impossible for you to get passionate about anything? Do you care if many Americans spend the rest of their "paltry" years on respirators? Your comments, at least to me, make you appear as a foolish dolt. I guess I would be happier as a clueless moron too, but intentionally making yourself a clueless moron because you have better things to do is worse than just stupid.

So unless you want to have an actual discussion on the issue then you can leave me be. I don't need to discuss why you think it is smarter to just ignore everything, I know that is plain stupid and I am done responding.

I see no reason to carry your banner for you.

What are YOU doing about it?

This very thread is an example. I also am acting by moving my family out of Florida in to the northern region of the US. I am warning all my friends and family in the area of this very real danger. It is absolute that toxins emitted from the oil spill will make landfall. Considering the mass of toxins that are measured at ground zero it is likely that large amounts will make landfall. Is it 100% that my residence will soon be inundated with toxins, NO. I'll never make that claim. Is it a concern enough to warrant discussion, absolutely yes. And it is definitely worth moving my three boys out of the area until the threat is gone. I protect my own and warn people because I care, you close your eyes and ears and go la la la because you don't care. Your comments show that you feel helpless. Maybe it's time to start acting instead of just letting "them" take care of it. History as shown the government to be unsuccessful in everything they do. They will lie to protect monetary interest. They will lie to hide blame. They will lie and let me and my family suck up toxins while they say everything is ok. You trust them if you want to. You can even come down and buy a condo on Long Boat Key, I could care less. I speak to those who care to listen. I post on JREF because I love all the responses that just insult and claim, somehow, that their insults actually proved a point. Maybe someone will surprise me and actually respond factually. So far all I got is reasons why I shouldn't talk about it. (i.e. I'm not a scientist, I am not a government official assigned to worry about it, I'm a conspiracy theorist so i should be discounted, etc)

Yes. Well.

Good luck with all...that.
