I'm still trying to figure out how the cocaine possession charges against Jaffer were dropped. All I can figure is (a) what the police found was not actually cocaine, or (b) the cocaine was found as a result of something which would be deemed an illegal search.

Option (a) doesn't strike me as particular realistic, and option (b) would mean the police screwed up. I'd like to think there're a little more competent than that.

Re Jaffer: a lawyer friend of mine, with no connection to the case at all, suspects (b) is the correct answer. She said the Crown Attorney's actions and statements are what she'd expect after an illegal search.

Some speculation from a CBC Radio show a couple of mornings ago (sorry, no reference, but it was speculation anyway ). One was that Jaffer's lawyer was complaining that the drugs were in Jaffer's jacket hanging in his car not his trousers' pocket as the police claim. Good luck before a judge with this one I would guess. And the other (more possible, I suppose) was that Jaffer was given a deal if he spilt the goods on his criminal friends. This spreads across jurisdictions (RCMP and OPP) but I guess is somewhat possible.

A report on the CBC National News earlier tonight recounted the events of Jaffer's arrest. It does mention that the drugs were found in Jaffer's jacket pocket.
