Colorado starts recreational sales of marijuana today (Green Wednesday).

Lines form around the block at retail establishments which are open for business to anyone who wants to buy some weed.

I never thought we'd see it happen.

I think they're fine with using this as a test bed, to see if it is viable, or if not, to get good data on why it isn't/wasn't.

When I saw a news story that mentioned the prices I almost fell out of my chair. When I was growing up in Kentucky in the 80s I could get an ounce of good pot for $30. I'm glad I don't smoke it now.

Colorado medical pot ads feature "$99 oz" so average non-sale prices can be estimated from there. On top of that the Colorado voters passed the "keep black market pot attractive" bill, with a 25% combined excise and sales taxes applied to whatever over-the-counter price vendors ask.

An amusing side feature of this is that Denver has pot shops open but allegedly uber-liberal Boulder (actually full of LandRover Liberals, millionaires and reportedly more lawyers per capita than any city outside the District of Columbia) won't have shops for a couple more months due to county regulations, including a requirement for building permits and code inspections. (citation)

Gonna be an interesting couple of years as this settles in.

I really don't care about the issue as it doesn't have anything to do with me as far I can determine. However, I'm already annoyed by seeing all these TV interviews with advocates for this law, some of them clearly stoned, droning on and on about how the only real problem surrounding the issue is that the public needs to be educated about weed and then it will all be okay. Or something like that. Isn't what they're really saying is that everybody should start smoking dope like them?

Rather the issue is weed is practically harmless and could be a boost for the economy, so legalize it and leave people alone who aren't hurting anything or anybody.

Hmm
If they restrict it to the over 25s perhaps
There are links to mental health issues in younger users.
we are trying to manage these issues here in the UK

Restricted to over-25s? Even the harshest age limits on drinking are 21 , are they not? Mind, we used to have a higher age of consent for gay sex, so there's some kind of precedent there...

Modern weed is more like spirits than ale, and yes, it's a thing, some people will develop issues related to it, like any other thing. It certainly seems to strip the will, if there's little will there in the first place - I've always thought it more likely that people with problems smoke dope than that people who smoke dope have problems. If self-medication works, I'm loathe to stand in the way and it has to be a better idea to profit from it than to throw squillions at a War On Drugs that is unwinnable.
