Gray hair a biology question

I got a couple of grey, well white really, spots on the back of my head, they just turned up when I was around 17 I think. They look like one patch when my hair is longer about 3 mm, but it's pretty obivous. People keep asking if I dye my hair, I am polite, but I want to say "Why would I dye a white patch on the back of my head? Do I look like I'm insane?"

The former tennis player Pat Rafter has a white patch on his hair a bit like that. His buddies gave him the nickname "skunk" because of it. Nice of them. :D

Well my friends weren't cruel enough to call me skunk, SquishyDave is actually how I am known to some of my friends, I'm not sure which is worse. :)

I'm up to 3 grey hairs that I can see. Two are long and one is short. I'm proud of them cuz' I think I earned them. Grey doesn't really run in my family.

Also, you might check over at The Straight Dope.com- I think I saw an article addressing hair supposedly turning grey or white ovenight there. I recall reading that hair growth proceeds in cycles of dormancy and growth, and something about pigmentation loss.
