It's flu shot time in the USA (and probably lots of other places), and a co-worker is claiming that flu shots are not necessary because if you get the flu you can just treat it with grapefruit seed extract. What little that I've been able to find about grapefruit seed extract, other than on websites of people selling the stuff, is that it has no intrinsic anti-microbial properties but that the preservatives in commercial products do provide some anti-microbial agents. Any opinions?

Nah, just tell him to get innoculated with GSE - then expose him to flu. Watch the fun!!:D

Grapefruit Seed Extract or Citrus paradisi has undergone in vitro trials, but there are very few clinical trials.

However, rather than flu, GSE is more widely known for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties, for gut problems.

When I went travelling in India a few years ago now, I developed severe stomach problems. In addition to GSE I also took Acidophilis and this combination helped a great deal without the need for any other interventions.

What would have happened if you had not taken those things?

I find that those candied citrus peels do good things for me. You know, the stuff for making fruit cakes? I use it as jam on peanut butter sandwiches. Citrus oils have solvent properties as well as probable anti-microbial properties. I don't know exactly what component is in GFE, but I could see that Orange Zest is pretty potent stuff- for something beside paint stripper. Kill off excess gut biotics? Supply some trace umm component?

I think that GSE works pretty well in terms of its anti-microbial properties. It's often used to treat yeast successfully, and stomach upset. I've also found NutriBiotic GSE

, which comes in tablets and capsules to avoid the nasty taste of the liquid form. I think it's good stuff.
