Google's Nexus 7

If you root the Nexus 7, you can change permissions for what an app can and cannot get access to with one of the apps specialized for this purpose. I would suggest Avast, a free Android security application. It can block the most useful stuff for each app, like wifi, 3G and the phone.

You will probably figure out fast why these apps want that kind of access. On iOS they use that kind of access all the time, the users just accept it by downloading the app, instead of being told. Most the apps have a good reason to do so. There are still many that might not though.

For text editing in pure text, and not something like Word documents, I would suggest Total Commander. It can edit text documents / files, unpack, organize your files, access FTPs and other useful stuff.

Otherwise try DB Text Editor. You can use that one with Total Commander.
Thanks Kblood, a most useful reply & much appreciated. Will investigate "rooting" & look further at your recommendations.

Installed CleanRom 1.1 last night, custom ROM. It's like overclocked stock without some of the Google bloat. V smooth.

Been messing around with Tablet Talk. Can send / receive SMS when connected to same local network as my mobile.

Tinker tinker tinker.

ETA: Oh and Calibre Companion to sync with Calibre. A good way of working around the nuisance lack of USB mass storage connection on ICS+.

I got my Nexus 7 yesterday, rooted it this morning, installed Stickmount and ES File Explorer and I'm good to go. I was able to play video from a 32GB USB drive and look at pictures from an SD card using a card reader. Woot!

Cool. Good to know.

I like the Groove IP app that allows free calling via Google voice though.

Now to see if I can vpn into work and make it productive as well as fun.

I hope you have not rooted yet, because you need to know that it might make it harder to use services like Netflix and Hulu, since they need DRM to work.

But if you are not using services like that, then there are is much to gain from rooting. Especially when it comes to Avast and its anti theft security. You will be able to control it when its online if you need to, and get its location. There is a kind of command interface for it.

Also you can block WiFi, 3G or phone services from specific apps, and when you get Jelly Bean on it, if it haven't got that already, you can also stop it from putting messages in the notifications tray.

And if you do not need sound, then I can recommend Team Viewer. Its even free for personal use.

Get the THD version of Splashtop Pro (THD) and you can even right click normally, when you connect a mouse and you can use the full 720p resolution. I have two or 3 versions of Splashtop remote so far. It certainly is one of the best remote control apps out there. Connect bluetooth or USB mouse and keyboard, and you almost got yourself a netbook.

Also check out Lookout. Seems a decent free security app, running that on my Nexus and OneX.

Netflix works fine on my rooted Nexus. I didn't replace the stock OS, just opened it up so I could use apps that need it to be rooted, like Stickmount.

Heh - anybody who came of age in New Zealand in the 1980s can't help but snigger at the use of the word 'rooted'.

But no, not yet. I have found out how but am still a virgin (snigger snigger).

Not an issue for me.

...and when you get Jelly Bean on it...

Came with Jelly Bean out of the box, assuming I'm correct in thinking that's Android 4.1.

Yep 4.1 codename is Jelly Bean.

Anyone else had a problem with touch sensitivity seemingly reduced after playing graphically heavy games for a while (and immediately afterwards)?

Bump this old thread for what appears to be new pricing for the holidays...

Really it is the same old pricing, just with more storage.

Instead of $199 8GB and $249 16GB, the 8GB will disappear, the 16GB will go down to $199 and a new 32GB will be $249.

Official announcement should be Oct 29th.

This article seems to think you should be able to find 8GBs pretty cheap in the next few days as they try and clearance them.

It's looking good that I delayed buying one for a bit. I almost bought one on two occasions!

Oh crap...no posts since 10/2012?

I have been new tech shy ever since I laid out the best part of a 5,000 dollar bill for the latest Windows 94 dream machine...oh sometime around Christmas 1993.

So here I am talking to myself about my new Nexus 7 purchased last month 32 GB for $229 shipped to my door. I LOVE IT!!! Sure its missing a camera and a memory slot...but I think they got the glass cracking issue fixed. I got a nice protective case for mine anyway...I even tried to put one ....actually two tries at putting a plastic screen protector on...which seems to be an impossible task unless you are content to look past the air bubbles...microscopic dust particles trapped under it and finally just removed them and placed them in the X file.

I downloaded a rooting tool kit and so I came here to figure out why I need to do that since I don't have a smart phone and barely understand apps at all...but I'm learning.

I worry a bit about these apps and I get the strange feeling the Google or whoever is spying on me. They want to know everything and my location and even when out of range of WiFi they seem to know what I'm thinking and that bothers me a bit because 3/4 the time I don't know what I'm thinking and the other 2/4 I'm confused.

The other day my computer rang at me like an old style telephone...the one with the circle thing with numbers...member dat? Anyway I hung up on it even though Im pretty sure it was from a long lost buddy from the service...but still. He wanted to call me I guess and he wanted to see me. And I wasn't ready to be seen by long lost buddies...perhaps if I had shaved and combed my hair then I may have clicked accept...

But the fact remains he could do that (actually thru Facebook I think) and I remain trapped in some Twilight Zone...the old one.. not Twilight Dawning or whatever...I cant figure out how to post a funny pic onto someones elses little story...Oh I can do the whole new item by clicking on their name but ...oh never mind.

I love my new Nexus 7. I could have gotten the phone one but they say it is crappy 3G technology...and it may be better to get a mobile thingy that can connect the Nexus by cellular as some sort of WiFi connection or base or whatever.

I'm wondering if carrying all these electronic devices will increase the speed with which my hairline seems to be receding? Or is there an app for that?

Windows 94 was freaking amazing. And I saw a man standing on the wing of my airline flight...the other day. So, should I root or not?

Mine is rooted, from day 1 of purchase - I just love tinkering around with other peoples tweaked OS.

Now, I shall say this......rooting a Nexus probably wont make a great deal of difference to many many people. I figure if I didnt need to tinker then I could quite happily do without. The main reason for rooting when first released was to add 'hacked' on-the-go USB support. I have a 32Gb uSD card and adapter wich I stock with films / tv etc whenever I travel. Otherwise my 16GB Nexus has ample room.

Another reason is the abilit to overclock the CPU/GPU - can get blazing fast speeds and set great numbers on artificial benchmarks - but, and this is a biggie, as a tinkerer I loved it, however I have actually started installing custom kernels which underclock it - more battery life.

Google seems pretty open 'bout OS and rooting, and for their own products it is easy and sometimes not needed. It is pretty difficult to brick one too, which is a bonus. I still want to root my HTC OneX but very wary!

Mal.
