I have found a very interesting blog that is looking into the origins of the claims that lots of 'giant skeletons' were found all over the United States during the 19th Century.

The author is collating a database of original source material, which could be useful since cable TV has started to promote these ideas again.

I haven't had a chance to read the whole blog as yet but it seems to be a pretty thorough analysis (aka debunking). I particularly liked:
On Search for the Lost Giants they fly around in helicopters, crisscross the country, go caving, hire a sketch artist, and consult with a dental anthropologist, but nobody thinks to type the phrase into Google?

;)

Well, there was at least one giant in America...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Wadlow

But he's not really what you'd call lost. I mean, we know exactly where he is now, so he likely doesn't count.
And good luck getting to his skeleton, it's under a foot of concrete as per his family's wishes.
Can't have some ghoul digging him up for fun or profit, can we?

As I recall, the recountings of the discoveries of such skeletons always ended something like, "They were sent to a scientific institution, where they were lost or destroyed."

Convenient, isn't it?

:blackcat:

I suffered through one of the episodes. What a load of crap. One unsupported assertion after another. Incredulity, stupidity, and willful ignorance proudly flouted.

If you want crap, try watching "Swamp Monsters" where a bunch of guys who look like movie extras from Deliverance tear around hunting down big bad mythical monsters in swamp country.

I watched a few minutes of the first episode hoping that it was a Poe.... it wasn't!
