Good nutrition over 40

Carlson Menatrenone, 5mg, from Drugstore.com , $15/60, free shipping. I take 3 morning, 3 afternoon. Plus 6000u D3 morn and night. Plus magnesium, 400mg same schedule. Drugstore, com is Wagreens net div. I haven't tried a brick store.

It seems to be working for me, but I hope for a drop in hypertension some day. (high was once 250/170. My meds are down 75% since, but weight is down 60# too.) I figure to keep up that dose for a year in those hopes. $45/month at this dosage, plus the other supplements.

Besides hypertension and murmur, I've also got a myopathy and tII diabetes. Both of which could be calcium related- Gliburide helps transfer calcium back out of a membrane in the pancreas, and myopathy is caused by muscle cells so weak they can't push the calcium electrolyte back out of a membrane. I'm sure I may be oversimplifying. But a lifetime of bad calcium metabolism could be my 'theory of everything', so is worth investing $500.

Found this one if you're interested in cutting down the number of pills you take - they're 15mg per pill!

Whey protein isn't expensive, it is a cheap source of protein.

Not that I want to get in on this protein discussion between you and GlennB, but this statement of yours is important to me. Not only is whey protein a cheap and good source of protein, but for vegetarians like me its *very* useful. Getting a well-rounded veggie meal on the road is at best a challenge and often all but impossible. Having single-serving pouches of protein powder with me can make a real difference.

Price looks good too, if they don't kill me on shipping and handling, which is free from Drugstore.com . I'll look into it further in a couple weeks when it's time to re-order.

I'm curious as to the dosages. Have you got some research on the benefits of high K2?

While know RDI or UL has been set, the current recommended AI is 120mcg, so 15mg is heading towards megadose territory.

This gives a pretty good background. http://www.lef.org/magazine/mag2008...ne-And-Arterial-Health-With-Vitamin-K2_01.htm

Or try googling <K2 Rotterdam> or <K2 osteoporosis>

I think I'm going to look at <k2 dental caries>, wondering of my rotten teeth are also linked to calcium metabolism probs?

Haven't read all through this one, but a couple of suggestions. I'm 64, in pretty good shape though I also tend a bit toward midriff fat. I was doing better this spring until an accident ended my bicycling season, possibly forever (balance), and curtailed my swimming season though not, thankfully, forever.

For good filling food, try black beans and rice. Spice to taste which can be quite spicy or not. Beans are full of good stuff. Bean soups too, good and filling, with or without meat and other ingredients to taste. You can get dried bean soup mixes as a base and make a big crockpot full of hearty soup that will last some time.

Salads with grilled chicken can give you big meal with little fat and plenty of flavor too if you minimize the dressing.

A taste for fish is useful.

Weights are good, especially for flexibility, but consider adding something like swimming which can work on all your muscles and get you into aerobic shape too. Bicycling is nice too if you can avoid getting hit. :(

I run, walk, and work out with dumbbells. I do situps, pushups, crunches, etc.

I have little body fat, but of course what I have gets distributed evenly to my belly these days. It might be a losing battle but I will win or die trying.

My biggest problem is sensible nutrition; I don't eat well. Twice a day, mid-afternoon and around 8-9 o'clock. 2000+ calories total, which I should up.

What I want is food ideas. I eat lots of chicken, rice, and this past year have tried to cut out fatty foods and unnecessary things like soda, anything that comes in a bag.

Good protein, and, my doc says, more calcium; I am heading towards osteopoenia. Suggestions are welcome!

Why are you eating at 8-9 o'clock? Unless your day is timeshifted and you go to bed at 3 AM, you should eat your last meal by 6 or so. Eating close to bed just stores it more as fat.

Re: K2 and cavities, there are some studies.

For a long time I've heard that there is a correlation between rotten teeth and CAD. I'm guessing K2 explains it, rather than some infection causing artery inflammation AND acidifying the mouth so that enamel dissolves. My guess now is that K2 picks up the calcium, and puts it where it belongs- out of artery walls and into bones- and enamel.
