Good news: Update to StopSylvia.com!

You're very kind, rj - thanks.

Remember just before your stroke Sylvia Browne went on a farewell tour and was definitely winding back. She probably would have had to retire. Then you were planning on doing the same for other psychics. Probably with the same result. Final result is that society does not accept claims of psychic powers all due to your actions.

All I am doing here is extrapolating from what was happening before you had the stroke.

...and a pretty... optimistic extrapolation it is!

I'm a very new poster, but have read JREF, and StopSylvia for a goodly while.

I just want to say a huge Thank you to you, Mr Lancaster :D

My friend lost her husband recently, and of course wanted to spend her hard-earned on psychics. I directed her to here and SSB.

Thankfully she saw what a waste of money it would be. Over her in Scotland though- we call them 'old spey wives'..lol But they still can charge a fortune!

Know that was a bit OT, but needed to say it:o

I hope you keep on the road to recovery RSL..keep those wheels turning;)

Optimistic? No I do not see it like that. See the post between our posts. Your site stopped someone going to a psychic. And you have not even started on other psychics yet! Imagine how many people you are influencing and not knowing about.

@zelda:

I don't know where you are in Scotland, but here in the Ayrshire area, Sally Buxton (and to a lesser extent, Margaret Dreyer) are starting to gain in popularity to the point where they are filling community centres each week. Think it might be time for a bit of proactive skeptic activity to happen at one or more of their shows...

....because noooobody expects proactive skeptic activity!

Um, what is our chief weapon again?

Oh, I have no doubt that many folks have been helped by SSB. It's a wonderful feeling, but extrapolating from that to the happy outcome you posited just seems extremely optimistic to me, but thanks!

Hi Reno- I'm just outside Inverness. The only shows here are the little ones in the local community centre. Actually Margaret Dreyer rings a bell. I'm sure she was here at some point.

I went to one a couple of years back and had to leave because it was just so...sad. These poor folks hanging onto every word, and all she did was throw out the 'I'm getting a Jack..no-John'' of course all the old ladies were marvelling how wonderful she was.

And you're right-maybe I should go to another one, as a proactive sceptic..got to start somewhere. :D I'll Probably get run out of town

And you're very welcome RSL, one down-quite a few more to go

You're ver kind, but Browne's career isn't "stopped", although it has slowed waay down these past few years.

I meant one person stopped going to a psychic-amongst the others you've stopped. Sorry, didn't make myself clear :o

And yes- SB has definitely been slowed down a whole lot :D

Oh, I see now.

And yes- SB has definitely been slowed down a whole lot :D

Of course, there is no way to tell how much credit for that - if any - goes to my site, but I like to think that it played a fairly big part in it.

JREF user Brattus once expressed the opinion that Sylvia's "slowing down" in recent years was nothing more than the natural end to her career arc.

And, who knows? he may be right about that. The important thing is that she IS on her way out. Who or what caused it is secondary to that.

I still remember when a friend in Browne's office told me business had slowed dramatically and they attributed it to your site. So much so that your name had become something of a curse word around the office - I assume they meant "accompanied by cursing," but who knows.

It definitely had an effect. Was the effect lasting? It would seem to have been but as I no longer have friends in the office, I don't know. And Montel also went off the air right around this time, which I would think would have played a part in slowing her down even more.

But I think it's important for skeptics to realize that what happened with Browne is a pretty good indication that this type of web site can have a powerful effect, and hopefully be inspired to create sites of their own.

The way I see it: People go searching for information on Browne, half considering a reading, or maybe just curious after reading one of her books, or a friend has gotten interested, and they stumble on your web site, where they can read page after page of rational, informational, evidence-based articles evaluating Browne's actual abilities. So it's evidence based and there's lots of it.

Granted, the nice thing about Browne was that so much televised material was available (her Montel predictions about missing persons). This might present more of a challenge with other psychics where less actual footage is available to be analyzed, but I believe it could still be done.

But what you did here is brilliant. It definitely had a significant impact, at least according to my friend in the office. Never doubt that.

Yes, Montel no longer airing new episodes is probably the biggest factor, but that raises the question: Why did his show tank? I'd like to think that the negative attention my site put on his show was a factor in that but again - who knows?

...and it's such a simple idea, really. (though not simple in execution).

Granted, the nice thing about Browne was that so much televised material was available (her Montel predictions about missing persons). This might present more of a challenge with other psychics where less actual footage is available to be analyzed, but I believe it could still be done.

Yes, the availability of her "body of work" (Books, videos, Montel appearances, etc.) for analysis was one of the reasons I chose her for the site's focus. The others (VanPraagh, Edward, etc) have far less, and so would require a different approach, I'd think.

But what you did here is brilliant. It definitely had a significant impact, at least according to my friend in the office. Never doubt that.

Thanks, Ex-M!
