Yes, I can use guides (I've never been to Vegas), but I'd like to have recommendations from you folks as well.

What are good restaurants/buffets to eat at in Vegas? Which ones should I avoid? I eat pretty much any type of food.

Speaking of which, I have heard bad stories about some of the buffets...

I tried to do a search, but the search function has decided it is on vacation or something and won't work for me.

Ah, a topic on which I am an expert! I am in Las Vegas several times a year for work, and have made a close study on where and what to eat. Before I can answer, do you have budgetary concerns, preferred cuisines, or dietary restrictions? The buffets in general are overrated (other than Sunday brunch), but the MGM Grand has always been reliable for me. Most fun is the Nine Fine Irishmen over at New York New York, best Italian (somewhat pricey) is Francesca's at Treasure Island, best Japanese is a tiny hole-in-the-wall at Bally's called Ichiban, best steak (pricey again) is Lawry's (off-strip, must drive), best Mexican is Dona Maria's (off-strip, must drive but can take the bus, cheap, excellent tamales), best overall value is 777 Brew Pub down-town at Main Street Station (beer!).

Let the debate begin!

Only restriction is reasonable price (No $40 hamburgers), but I can afford to eat fancy once or twice. This is my vacation before I start working for the summer, so I want to make the best of it. I'm looking to experiment as far as types of food go.

In that case, I would recommend the Nine Fine Irishmen (they have stuff I had never heard of, but was very tasty), Dona Maria's, and 777 Brew Pub, as the down-town area needs to be experienced at least once. 777 also has an incredibly varied menu, as Main Street Station caters to the Hawaiian vacationers. If you do not drink beer, they also have a root beer on tap that goes great with the basic bar food. I know the Lotus of Siam is awesome Thai food, and there is generally a mass forum expedition there one night (not sure when).

I have found that the "name" restaurants (Emeril, Wolfgang Puck, Todd English, etc.) are good, but stuffy/snooty. Las Vegas is about having fun IMHO.

Pick a night (I get in Wednesday morning) and a cuisine, and I can play tour guide/roving gourmand. :)

Who wants to come along?

A fellow at work who was just in Vegas mentioned the Nine Fine Irishmen to me, and it sounded like the sort of place I'd like, so I'd be up for an outing. I'm there from Tuesday until the following Wednesday, so there's a few nights I'd be available.

Also , that downtown brew pub sounds cool. Hutch was planning a possible Fremont Street trip, which we could combine with this.

As ive never been to Vegas (or the US for that matter) before, i'd certainly be up for a guided tour of the best eating places. Better remember to pack my elasticated pants :)

For breakfast we like to head out to Blueberry Hill. It's about two miles due east of the Flamingo, on the south side of the road. Standard breakfast fare, but several notches above what you'd get at Denny's. The best part, though, is that it's far enough away from the strip so there are no tourists (except us) and the prices are not jacked up.

Is anyone up for Nine Fine Irishmen Wednesday night? My mom comes in late Wednesday, and is not very interested in Irish food (or watching me drink whiskey), so that would be the best night for me.

Mmmmm, boiled potatoes. I'm in.

Wednesday sounds good to me, and it seems a few others agree. Let's call this a plan.

What time will we go? When does you mom arrive?
