Sooooo.....It looks like I'm finally getting some of the courses I've been wanting, but been denied for the last two years. Including, hopefully, a .NET webdeveloper microsoft certificate one and an app developer workshop. (as well as a couple of refreshers on Jquery and Javascript in general)

All courses and workshops will include free books/material (one even a free ipad mini ;)) however since I'm apparently sorted into Ravenclaw instead of Slytherin, I was wondering if any of you knew of a couple of good books on the subjects.

I was looking for at least a good introduction(No "for dummies" recommends please) for someone otherwise trained, and experienced, in PHP/MySQL and a good pro book (in style with the O'reilly one on PHP) on both subjects. The app workshop will be focusing on things for Itunes(Iphone and Ipads) allthough I am also trying to find a good course for Android.

what? I was just told I have the right to 28 weeks of free, government sponsored education based on getting my job oppertunities expanded. Might as well use it.

I think you can familiarize yourself well enough with MVC and webforms from the ASP.NET site's tutorials: see the MVC Tutorial and Webform Tutorial. I personally recommend skipping webforms entirely in favor of MVC, I wouldn't bother learning webforms unless you had a pressing need to do so.

For books specifically, I'm consistently happy with the black and yellow "Pro [XYZ]" series of books published by Professional Apress:

ASP.NET MVC 3 + C# 3.5: Steve Sanderson's Pro ASP.NET MVC Framework is a crowd favorite.

ASP.NET MVC 4 + C# 4.0: Adam Freedman's Pro ASP.NET MVC 4 should be equally good and up-to-date.

If you have zero experience with C#, I'll recommend flipping through Head First C#. Quick read without missing anything important, stylistically engaging, more than adequate reference since you're already familiar with PHP.

For some reason, I've almost always used Wrox books. The "Professional" titled ones tend to be very comprehensive. They also have "Beginning" titled ones that still treat you more like a pro than some others around.

O'Reilly seems to be popular, though.

First of sorry for not getting back to you all earlier. Due to a cracked tooth, jaw infection and an eye infection all happening at the same time, I've been on a rather complex cocktail of painkilllers, penicilin and eyedrops for the last couple of days and asleep more often than not (to add to the pain: The cracked tooth can't be removed untill the jaw infection is gone and then there was this detail about a possible entanglement with a facial nerve running awfully close to the root of bad tooth.....whoopie.....)

Anyway: I actually think that a couple of these books show up on the "materials you'll recieve list" but I know that I'll need to invest in at least the one on C#. Aw hell, I'll probably invest in them all and put the doubles up on ebay....

Thank you very much for your help, you have given me a great starting point.
