No it's that guy Paul that always had a stick up his butt about one thing or another. Here ya go, it's
Thessalonians 3:10.
Jesus and Paul are antithetical if you ask me.
I won't go into the whole discussion about Paul (we had many many topics about it), but the same Paul makes an even bigger show of collecting money for the poor. In fact, the whole 2 Corinthians is mostly his arguing that he can be trusted with collecting money for the poor.
But anyway, if you want references to that, try for example 2 Corinthians 8, Romans 15:26, etc.
But more relevant for the church attitude back then, as described in the NT is Galatians 2:10, "
All they asked was that we should continue to remember the poor, the very thing I had been eager to do all along." 'They', as per the previous verse being, James, Peter and John.
Again, I'm not going to go into the whole discussion of what I think about Paul and the contradiction with the verse you quoted, but if we're discussing supportable Christian theology, then by FAR more of what's in his epistles supports taking care of the poor, and as above at at least 3 other apostles support that position.
And he's not the only one. The epistle of James for example at chapter 2:
15. Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food.
16. If one of you says to them, “Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it?
As well, as most of James 2 for that matter, or the commie-hippie cursing the rich in James 5:1-6.
And 1 John 4:20, also contains this summation, which I feel is relevant to the topic at hand: "
Whoever claims to love God yet hates a brother or sister is a liar. For whoever does not love their brother and sister, whom they have seen, cannot love God, whom they have not seen." (Mind you, it's not just one verse. Most of 1 John drones about that on and on.)
Or then there's Revelation which has Jesus himself praise the poor church of Smyrna (Rev 2:9), and blasts the church of Laodicea thus: "
You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked." (Rev 3:17)
Etc.
So yeah, the notion that one should do whole hate speeches against the poor is not very supportable theology.
