THE Hollywood adaptation of Philip Pullman’s trilogy His Dark Materials, in which two children do battle with an evil, all-powerful church, is being rewritten to remove anti-religious overtones.

Chris Weitz, the director, has horrified fans by announcing that references to the church are likely to be banished in his film. Meanwhile the “Authority”, the weak God figure, will become “any arbitrary establishment that curtails the freedom of the individual”.

The studio wants alterations because of fears of a backlash from the Christian Right in the United States. The changes are being made with the support of Pullman, who told The Times last year that he received “a large amount” for the rights.

Why do Christians say they are persecuted and under threat when they hold such a sway over people with other, or no beliefs?

Because their book says they are. We're not talking about humans with a keen grasp of reality, after all.

I read this book trilogy over the past summer, and I must say that it's an absolutely fantastic story. It's an epic tale, with great characters and all the magic, mystery, and adventure that made Lord of the Rings so popular. Indeed, it's been called "the next Lord of the Rings" for good reason.

And, yes, it is rather anti-church. The trilogy takes place mostly in an alternate earth-like world (People have daemon familiars, magic exists, and so forth. I've heard it described as "Earth...shifted one inch to the right.") where a church-like body does hold a great deal of power. It is portrayed as evil, and I can certainly see why certain members of THIS Earth would take offense to some of what said. As I recall, one of the reasons I loved the trilogy so much was because of its anti-religion undertones.

I'd strongly recommend the trilogy. If you liked LoTR, you'll love the His Dark Materials series.

I think things are different in the UK, where you are in the minority and mocked somewhat if you go to church etc.

BTW the Archbishop Of Canterbury said that His Dark Materials should form part of school RE lessonshttp://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/3497702.stm
Wow, between that and Bishop Spong, the Anglican Church (outside of Africa) is practically Unitarian.
