God-DOES-Answer-Your-Prayers

Or, to put it another way...

Are you implying that there isn't a single amputee in this entire world with enough faith?

What I wanted to say that is a question of faith is that God answers prayers, even if it's to deny the request. After all, if God exists and have the attributes usually abscribed to Him (omniscience, omnipotence, omnipresence, and don't ask me how this can be possible, because I don't know either), can our limited minds undertansd His purpose? (gosh, what a load of mumbo-jumbo)

"Limited minds" compared to what?

The topic of this thread is God answer our prayers, isn't it? And I tried to make an argument about that sometimes the answer of God, as is portrayed usually (omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, etc.) may be to ignore the request, for reasons beyond our (human) understanding.

And frankly as I read what I wrote I notice how weak the argument is.

After winning the Masters yesterday Zach Johnson said, “My Christian faith is very important to me. It was very special to win the Masters golf tournament on Easter Sunday. I am very blessed. I would like to thank God. I felt Jesus Christ with me on the golf course every step of the way.”

Thanks for posting that Moochie, this is the kind of stuff which really pisses me off.

Stupid little christian wanker.

Oh yeah, your pathetic god has the ability and desire to be at your shoulder to help you win a frigging game, while thousands of kids starve to death.

This is the god I'd like to meet in person. Crucifixion would be a doddle compared what I have written down to do to it

If statements like that and belief in them isn't an admission of complete stupidity, I don't know what is.

It was the "our limited minds" comment that got me. What twaddle!

Agreed. Just once I'd like hear one of the losers say, "I could have won easily, but Jesus kept kicking my ball away from the hole!" Maybe a sports magazine should go with the headline: JESUS HATES TIGER WOODS

In fact, I'm going to start a thread on Jesus in sports to let this one continue on its merry way; it's a subject which has been bugging me for some time.

Yeah, it is. That's what I got for entering in a discussion without thinking.
Lots' of people go for that one - it was even a Reader's Digest thingie in one of their anecdotes - of- a -type columns in the 50's/early 60's (approx. "with tears glistening in her eyes, she looked at me and carefully said, "God said No!" " ). I had my usual reaction - which , since I have found unless I have plenty of warning, is functionally uncontrollable - and grabbed for my (not present) SMG to terminate this God thing. I first heard this SFB explanation in MYF - 9th or 10th grade and recognized it for the obscene crap it is as quickly as the YM spewed it (not a bad person, just had been fed and digested too much of the dogma)(took about a minute to respond , also app. " So, even though Dog could have saved the X baby who was killed in the fire in Antioch last week, he didn't but it's o.k. because he had a reason we just can't understand?". The rest of the discussion was not productive.))

I don't understand this endless ass kissing of this invisible diety who cares more about what you believe than what you do.

And the dead guy cares about golf?

And why pray if god is all knowing, doesn't he know what you want--why pray--he like groveling? And if his answer is "no" or "later" or whatever is his will--what the hell does it matter whether you pray or not. Isn't it all pointless if he already knows the final tally and what prayers he'll be answering for whom-- I will note that he didn't seem to answer any of the prayers of the passengers and their families who were imploring him per recorded phone conversations on 9-11-2001. I guess he was busy helping someone with their golf game.

Christianity leads to utter stupidity.

I am glad I thought my way out of that mind trap. echkk!

Ah, it came to me in a dream -- god is a sado-masochist.

Uh-huh. And how many baby bunny rabbits died in the world while Christ was chillin' at the golf course? Slacker.

Well, as a pretty-much-lapsed Catholic I have to say that God answer your prayers... although a lot of times the answer is NO.

And sometimes is like a joke that I heard the other day:

During a flood a devout guy was praying for God to save him. Before the water reached his house, the sheriff came to evacuate him, and he refused saying that God would save him. Later, he was inthe roof, his house already half in the water another guy with a boat came to get him to safety. Again, he refused, saying that God would save him. Sometime later, his house was almost entirely under water and an helicopter came to rescue him. again he refused saying that God would save him. He drowned and went to Heaven, and there he asked God why he hadn't been saved, and God answered that He had sent him the sheriff, the boat guy and the helicopter, so if he was so determined to drown what could He do?

I like the one where Emo Phillips told of being in an airliner that was going down:

Emo: "Lord, if you save me, I'll give everything I own to the poor and devote my life to charity."
Pilot: "We've regained control! We're saved! It's a miracle!"
Emo: "Never mind, Lord. Thanks anyway."

Oh my. You have inspired me to do something that will be sure to piss off people I speak with in the future. I have never bitten my tongue from saying in the past "if god helped you(them/whomever) in this competitive event then god chose sides against your opponent." Now I will say "that's why Darfur is in such a mess. God is spending his time picking winners of sporting (financial/sex/pick a topic) events instead of removing suffering." I'm surprised I never thought to take this argument to the next level.

Unfortunately, there's a stock response to this, which goes something like "well, [God|Jesus] is infinitely [powerful|awesome|uber] that he can do any number of things at the same time. It's totally easy for him to help that nice man win the golf and still keep an eye on the racial cleansing in Africa."

You know, the "Wizards did it" response.
