Dear Prime Minister Mark Carney: Canada can’t afford to ignore climate change (Halifax Examiner, July 3, 2026)
It's not good enough that you're better than Pierre Poilievre

More fossil-fuel subsidies:
Pembina Institute on bsky, July 3, 2026)
Alberta and Ottawa said any new pipeline would be privately funded.
Today that promise was broken: a private company will cover just 10%. Taxpayers will front up tens of billions of dollars.
If oil exports are such an economic opportunity for Canada, why won’t companies invest?
Unable to find a private company to back pipeline, governments resort to 90% taxpayer ownership (Pembina Institute, July 2, 2026)
Today’s announcement breaks two promises that the federal and Alberta governments have repeatedly made to Canadians – that a pipeline would be privately financed, and would be contingent on oilsands companies reducing their emissions

New pipeline from Alberta to B.C. coast to be built as a private-public partnership (GlobalNews, July 2, 2026)
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Alberta Premier Danielle Smith have announced plans to build a new pipeline from Alberta to the British Columbia coast as a private public partnership.
This is “an approach that gives certainty to our businesses to build,” said Carney, who made the announcement at a press conference with Smith in Calgary Thursday evening.

The function of the oil industry has transitioned from "pump, refine, and sell oil" to "collude with government to redirect public funds to itself."
They know that most of the world is rapidly transitioning to solar.
So they're grifting their way into as much revenue as possible while they can.
Except for the "function of the oil industry," which was always the accumulation of capital, this is correct.
As fossil fuels are becoming increasingly outcompeted by the cheaper power from wind and solar, Big Oil now depends on corrupt politicians to prevent their investments from becoming worthless, so the fossil-fuel industry can continue to thrive on ruining the planet.

Bad of course. But by itself this is meaningless.
It by no means meaningless.

The rush to cut China some slack for being the world's highest emitter is highly entertaining. It's like...the USA should know better but the second most populous country on Earth? Well they don't have much of a choice, do they? It's Big Oil vs Big Government.

China's drop of 1.2%, now that's a real "climate emergency" number. /s

There is also the fact that the Eifel Tower is out of character. No Paris street offers that view of the Eifel Tower at that size. I haven't been to Paris (other than the airport) since 1972, but to make sure I took a couple of Google street views to make sure: https://maps.app.goo.gl/ue7rJKGUqzkDRAcU8
But I guess that's AI's artistic freedom. Much like the number of fingers, legs and arms in AI 'photos'.
So what? The point was that picture is not readily identifiable as being AI generated. It's AIs artistic freedom as well as any artists artistic freedom to create any scene that they fancy with no requirement that that scene be based on reality.

Deep subject.

Interestingly, the Dogwood left out the fact that Ksi Lisims LNG in an Indigenous led project, but that would distract from their rant about American billionaires.

The Tyee? That's about as reliable as Breitbart.

The Trans Mountain Pipeline (TMX) is currently pumping oil and making money, there's no reason to believe that The Westcoast Pipeline Project won't do the same. I'm sure we all remember the "peak oil" discussions from 20 years ago. Proponents were wrong then and there's no reason to believe they're getting it right this time.

Canadians may say they want to support government regulations to limit oil and gas companies’ greenhouse gas emissions. I mean, who wouldn't except the most diehard climate denialist? It's cheap, easy, fast, feel good answer to give on a survey however Canadians fossil fuel usage says otherwise.

The Iran War has led to a boom of exports of solar panels from China, with countries low on fuel scrambling to switch to renewable energy wherever possible.

Much like in Cuba – except that the reason why Cuba lacks oil is the U.S. blockade, which started before the USA attacked Iran:
Cuba’s Green Solution to the U.S. Oil Blockade: Solar-Powered Electric Tricycles (Belly of the Beast on YouTube, July 1, 2026 – 2:43 min.)
Electric tricycles have exploded across Cuba as the country faces extreme fuel shortages due to the U.S.-imposed oil blockade. But blackouts now last so long — 20 or more hours a day — there isn’t enough electricity to charge them.

It by no means meaningless.

You are through and through dishonest. Otherwise, you would have taken into account that it is to be expected that the world's second-most populous nation would be expected to be a higher emitter than the world's third-most populous country, considering that the size of its population is four times that of #3:
🇮🇳: 1,429,404,000
🇨🇳: 1,404,890,000
🇺🇸 : 341,784,857
And yet: CO₂ emissions per capita: 🇺🇸, 🇨🇳, 🇮🇳 (and 🇨🇦) (Our World in Data)

You won't get anywhere with your consistent obfuscation.

The ""peak oil" discussions from 20 year ago" were 50 years ago – after Hubbert's predictions turned out to be correct.

Of course, it will make money! With enough taxpayer subsidies, how could it not?
That's how the U.S. and now Canadian economies work: by keeping otherwise unprofitable fossil-fuel companies afloat by means of state subsidies to prevent them from being sunk by the competition from much cheaper wind&solar-generated electricity. The fossil-fuel industry and its paid politicians are the winners, and the rest of the population are the losers – both as consumers and as taxpayers.
See posts 2,363, 2,364 and 2,365.

The only thing you succeed in making clear with your posts is the dishonesty of people arguing for the continuation of the CO2-emitting fossil-fuel industry and its handouts to the political establishment.

Who's 'rushing to cut China some slack'? Certainly not me - I'm just countering the misrepresentations with relevant facts, like any good skeptic would. The fact is that even with a one party state China can't eliminate fossil fuel usage overnight. But it has a plan to reach peak emissions by 2030 (only 3.5 years away) and it's starting to bear fruit. If they keep at it they have a good chance of achieving that target before 2030, and then we will see an accelerating decline.

Meanwhile the rest of the world needs to do their bit too. While China is the largest single GHG emitter in the world, the rest of the world emits more. Countries which are doing a lot to help should be praised, while those who don't shouldn't be (even if they have done a lot in the past). The US has largely reduced its contribution by exporting manufacturing to China. The US is also the largest producer of oil in the world, and the third largest coal producer (just behind India). Cheap US fossil fuel exports are contributing to emissions from other countries.

Another large factor to consider is that China produces most of the technology other countries are using to reduce their emissions. Burning fossil fuels to do that is bad, but needs to be done to get the ball rolling. Once renewable energy production takes over the renewable energy products being produced will be be greener too, further accelerating the transition.

A certain amount of freeloading can be tolerated, but the more there is the harder it will be for the rest of us. We are all in this together, and everyone should do what they reasonably can to reduce emissions. The important thing is to reduce emissions everywhere, not just in China. A gram of CO2 is a gram of CO2, no matter where in the world it's emitted.

Climate policy of China
Another study showed that around 1/3 of emissions from China in 2005 were due to exports. Over half of those emissions driven by demand from the West are from transnationals taking advantage of China's developmental policies favouring heavy manufacturing over regions with more developed environmental laws and enforcement. This includes many of the Walmart-suppliers and other foreign-owned factories that stock department store shelves, particularly in the US.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that while China is number one right now, their all-tume total is half of America's.

Taking into account China's speed in embracing non-fossil energy, they will never catch up to America's total.

Focusing on China's current emissions is a corrupt argument.

Jason Scott on bsky, July 3, 2026
I'll summarize this: Mamdani asked NYers to keep air conditioning at 78 degrees. A wave criticism hit online. A MSNBC broadcast pointed out the US Department of Energy recommends that 78 degree figure.
Immediately after, the US Department of Energy deleted 6,000 web pages related to energy saving.
For my fellow oC users: 25.56oC.

Not a conspiracy. Not pattern matching. Mention a document that makes people look silly, and they will wipe years of documents and paid-for research to save face. Only some forward thinking to save a copy prevents oblvion.
Or as the Internet Archive calls it, Friday.
Anyway.

Welcome to communism, people!
Mamdani mocked by GOP for telling New Yorkers to set thermostats to 78 (The Hill, July 2, 2026)
Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) said Mamdani’s remarks are “Proof that communism is (unfortunately) alive and well.” Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) said, “This is Communism at work,” while Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) said, “The Socialist Democrats are coming for your AC.”
“This is the future that WOKE Democrats want not just for NYC but for South Carolina too!” Graham added, responding to Mamdani’s post.
NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani roasted over "78 degrees" suggestion. Here's why he's not sweating it. (CBS News, July 2, 2026)
Mamdani's facing two kinds of heat at Gracie Mansion - one from the sun and another from social media. Mamdani set the thermostat at Gracie Mansion to 78 degrees and asked New Yorkers to do the same.
"Yep. I set it myself," Mamdani said.
The mayor was totally unfazed by the massive social media blowback.
Barstool sports founder Dave Portnoy, for example, wrote "78 degrees??? Welcome to communism people! Hope you enjoy."
DOE deletes thermostat advice after NYC mayor's 78oF plea draws fire (MSN, July 3, 2026)
The Department of Energy deleted its cooling advice recommending 75-78oF settings, days after NYC's mayor promoted a similar target.

I actually hate (some) U.S. indoor temperature settings where you freeze your balls of if you're in a T-shirt, but that may just be because I'm a communist.

Abbott to Texans: Try To Use Less Power (Houston Public Media, Aug 12, 2026)
Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday made this appeal to Texans: Curb your electricity use, if you can — for the grid’s sake.

Can anybody explain why Canada's (Norway's, too) energy use per person (Our World in Data) is twice that of Greenland's? Iceland's is probably due to cheap geothermal energy.

Happy 4th of July from the U.S. Secretary of Energy!

I don't think any of these are parody accounts:
Secretary Chris Wright on X, July 2, 2026
I'm thrilled to report that after 35 years, on July 4th, we will end the subsidies for new wind and solar projects, thanks President Trump’s Working Families Tax Cut.
With a video, 1 min.
Wind & Solar take a lot of land – 100 times more land than similar amount of energy. They're taking enormous amounts of materials, energy-intensive materials, like steel and cement and polysilicon. They take an enormous amount of additional transmission lines that connect their large land far-flung production back to where there's demand centers. And what we get for all that is a relatively small amount of low-value energy. It's low value because the wind doesn't always blow, and the sun doesn't always shine, so they drive up the system costs and increase Americans' electricity prices.
Enough of raising electricity prices. We're gonna drive them down.

Notice that he doesn't mention sea-based wind turbines even thought they don't take up any land. He also stops comparisons with fossil fuels when he talks about materials.
"Low-value energy" is a brand-new concept invented for the occasion, but it's just a disingenuous way of making cheaper energy appear to be what's increasing electricity prices.

Wrong, of course.

Forrest said essentially the same thing. The reason governments have to back a pipeline today is because Canadian projects haven't been approved otherwise.

"We have proven over the last decade that private companies can come here, spend hundreds of millions, if not a billion dollars, advancing a project only to get rejected," said Forrest.

At this point, the pipeline is functionally “a government project," said Grant Sprague, former two-time deputy minister of energy in Alberta, adding some federal systems aren't setting the right conditions to attract private investment.

All my electricity is flowing through government owned powerlines, don't care if my oil is too. It's a very progressive approach. :)

Agreed. It's totally legit to reduce some of China's emissions due to their making products bought by the west. Just imagine how miserable life would be if we didn't have all that crap on Temu on offer. I had no idea I needed a bedside lamp shaped like a cat but there it was and as soon as I saw it, I just knew my old, boring bedside lamp was headed for the dumpster.

By the same token, we could also fob off some of the emissions generated by oil extraction and attribute them to the countries that buy that oil. So, Netherlands, here's the emissions bill that comes with all that American oil that you're asking them to pump for you.

Like you said, we're all in this together.

Let's not lose sight of the fact that while China is number one right now, their all-tume total is half of America's.
So what? While Americans were driving around in Camaros and listening to Zeppelin, the Chinese were experiencing the low carbon lifestyle of the Glorious Communist Cultural Revolution. America just had a head start.

Focusing on China's current emissions is a corrupt argument.

What was I saying about rushing to cut China some slack? Yes, yes I know, they're going to save the planet...any day now.

Nice to see you have strong allies in the struggle against mendacious austerity. Every New Yorker knows that what starts with not setting your AC thermostat six degrees cooler than you set your heating thermostat in winter, inevitably ends with mandatory daily cold showers.
