Global warming discussion III

I doubt History will lay much blame on him for the end of Florida as we know it.

No. Whereas the GOP will likely be one of those names you spit on the ground and make the evil eye after uttering. Those wilfully blind, self-serving, ruthlessly opportunistic dirtbags who did so much to obstruct and delay decade after decade. History will not be kind to their kind.

They have done more than most, but so far they've mostly been picking the low hanging fruit. Nothing is being done about the transport section. They recently decided on building a massive highway around Stockholm, for atleast 30 billion kronor (~5-6 billion$). That hasn't been a great strategy on reducing emissions in the past.

And they seem overly negative towards nuclear, atleast part of the new government, the greens. Doesn't seem certain they will do the necessary investments over the coming decades.

Ummm they reversed plans to close their nuclear facility. They do not appear to require additional nuclear since they have hydro soooo your point is ???

When transport goes EV and or hydrogen - who cares what kind of highway??? Scrimping on facilities and shivering in the dark is not a feature of carbon neutral....only a boogieman the right wing trots out.

Transport remains an issue until EV matures ....which it is.
Of course you do the low hanging fruit first......they remain a highly competitive industrial nation on the way to sustainable.....

They and many others are moving forward toward carbon neutral...

A good article on climate sensitivity and paleoclimatic reconstructions - the describe a new paper where the authors reconstructed the pliocene warming and found a sensitivity within the IPCC range, they then conducted another reconstruction on the pleistocene and found the same sensitivity range.

Refreshingly good science journalism from a daily newspaper

Nice thought. "Eat your broccoli or Smokey Koch will come and get you!" ;)

Glad to see that climatology hasn't forgotten its roots. Of course, at the beginning it was all palaeoclimatology - nobody gave much thought to climate change on the timescale of human lifetimes.

When they end with (my bold)
'But for now, it all amounts to another reason to trust climate scientists.”This suggests that the research community has a sound understanding of what the climate will be like as we move toward a Pliocene-like warmer future caused by human greenhouse gas emissions,” said study co-author Gavin Foster of the University of Southampton.'
raising any niggles I might have would be churlish.

If the transport section is going to switch from fossil fuels to electricity they probably will need more nuclear.

Most electricity grids have spare capacity at night when the bulk of charging is done. It is anticipated that once a significant mass of EV storage is reached it can be managed as part of the load leveling of the grid.
Efficiency gains in other areas will help as well. I'm sure they will sort themselves.

It's raining here in the Rockies...it was even raining at 8000 feet earlier. In February. A quick check at the records indicates this likely the most rain weve had at this time of year. Back to the 60s and 70s for the rest of the week. GW sucks. :(

Apple deal, tax change could spark corporate solar stampede

About 14 gigawatts of utility-scale projects are scheduled to come online in 2015 and 2016, compared with just 1 GW in 2017, according to Shayle Kann, senior vice president of research at market research firm GTM Research.

Corporations and other non-utility customers will buy more than 100 MW of the power from those projects this year and potentially more than double that next year, Kann said.

Even before Apple's announcement on Tuesday, the market was growing. Apple already had plans to power a new Arizona data center with solar power. And last year Duke Energy Corp reached a 20-year deal to sell power from a 52 MW project in North Carolina to The George Washington University, American University and George Washington University Hospital.

Also last year, the University of California signed 25-year agreements to buy 80 MW of power from two Frontier Renewables LLC projects in Fresno County.

Ahh but Boston is getting twice as much snow as it has ever gotten, bet they'd like a little GW. Being a blue state, I hope they get a lot more. :)

Um. You do realise that snow is precipitation, right? And that the warmer the planet gets, the more moisture is in the air, and hence the greater the occurrence of precipitation events? Right?

Physics is fun.

NYT gets it ....

New York Times: Those Who Deny Climate Science Are Not ‘Skeptics’

The American Association for the Advancement of Science — the world’s largest general scientific society explained in a 2014 report: “Physicians, cardiovascular scientists, public health experts and others all agree smoking causes cancer. And this consensus among the health community has convinced most Americans that the health risks from smoking are real. A similar consensus now exists among climate scientists, a consensus that maintains climate change is happening, and human activity is the cause.”

The media doesn’t write about “tobacco science skeptics” or even bother quoting people who deny the dangerous health consequences of cigarette smoking any more. It’s time for the media to treat climate science deniers the same way.

slight error correction....the greater intensity of precipitation events ( which of cours is what makes the news ).
Not more events, more intense events.
You could also say a great frequency of intense precipitation events.....

ah but the sun is shining for solar ;)
And many are moving to it....including Apple in a big way.

Apple is investing $850 million to build a giant solar farm that will power its new headquarters
The company is partnering with First Solar on an ambitious renewable energy project

MacDoc .... you have spoken against Profitable Capitalist Corporation Exxon in the past

Now that Apple has surpassed Exxon in market capitalization , have your views on Profitable Capitalist Corporations changed ?

Never mind that 2014 was the warmest year on record. Or that the 10 warmest years on record all occurred during the last 20 years. The denier cult still claims that the warming trend has stopped.
