Just read an article here (in Danish) which stated that the global porn market grosses just under 100 billion US dollars per year.

It is a big number. The article goes on to discuss how this is an outrage and how this amount of money could feed all starving Africans for years.

Just did some googling and found that the global GNP is around 70 trillion US dollars.

Somehow, I don't think there is a problem.

Thoughts?

I see no reason why the money spent on porn is any more wasted than the money spent on movies, computer games, alcohol, professional sports, beauty products, fashion, or any one of the other things that achieve nothing practical but give people entertainment and, when you get right down to it, make life a little more bearable.

Is your global porn, shall we say, not large. Do you have trouble pleasing your parter? Enlarge your global porn with larger fetish sections!

Very well said.

I agree with the drunk dinosaur from Banbury.

Most figures for how big the porn industry is are usually grossly exaggerated. I would take that 100 billion dollar figure with a grain of salt. A number frequently thrown around is that the porn industry in America generates over 10 billion when in reality it takes in about a third of that.

interesting article:

But regardless of how much it actually takes in, I agree with you DD. I don't see it as a problem either. It annoys me when someone says we could use that money and give it to charity. You can say that about anything that isn't essential then. Shall we also donate all the money we spend on sporting events, mainstream movies, music, fancy restaurants, etc. to charity as well?

edit to add: I see my last paragraph echoes what Seismosaurus said. Apparently he's spying on me.

You can't eat money. If money is all these starving people need then it sounds like there is plenty to be made in the porn industry.

Instead of looking at the porn industry why not look at all the business and industry that makes money from food. I'll bet that harvesting, preparing, shipping and selling food is a pretty large industry. Maybe they could throw some of their goods at these starving people. Something they can actually eat.

Just a storm in a DD cup

When I read about porn and billions of dollars, I just keep thinking, "This is very wrong...and what can I do to make some dough off this industry. ;)

Wow. That's almost $16 per person.

I wonder how much money is spent each year on poiintless articles?

I'm not quite sure why we should restrict it to Africa, but okay. There are about one billion people in Africa, so that's about $100 per person. I'm not sure how many of them are "starving", but I doubt that $100 billion would go all that far, even spread among them.
