Ghosts

Check how many hunters get killed through being mistaken for game if you think subjectivity's cool.)

There is a definite psychological aspect to these cases. The hunter was eager to see a deer to shoot, so his mind had tricked him into seeing a deer even though it was a human. Being aware of this aspect is critical knowledge before pullling the trigger.

This phemomena probably works in reverse, if you believe in and are scared by ghosts you are probably more likely to see them.

It was Saturday morning and Jake, an avid hunter, woke up ready to go bag the first deer of the season. He walks down to the kitchen to get a cup of coffee, and to his surprise he finds his wife, Alice, sitting there, fully dressed in camouflage. Jake asks her, “What are you up to?” Alice smiles, “I'm going hunting with you!” Jake, though he has many reservations, reluctantly decides to take her along.
They arrive at the hunting site. Jake sets his wife safely up in the tree stand and tells her: “If you see a deer, take careful aim on it and I'll come running back as soon as I hear the shot.” Jake walks away with a smile on his face knowing that Alice couldn't bag an elephant -- much less a deer.

But not 10 minutes pass when he is startled as he hears an array of gunshots. Quickly, Jake starts running back. As Jake gets closer to her stand, he hears Alice screaming, “Get away from my deer!” Confused, Jake races faster towards his screaming wife. And again he hears her yell, “Get away from my deer!” followed by another volley of gunfire.

Now within sight of where he had left his wife, Jake is surprised to see a cowboy, with his hands high in the air. The cowboy, obviously distraught, says, “Okay, lady, okay! You can have your deer! Just let me get my saddle off it!”

Sorry, I just had to.

Been a particularly bad year for that. Utterly bloody ridiculous.

You're right though - if people can kid themselves badly enough to end up killing someone, how much easier must it be to see a ghost?

Hmm...It's not unusual here at all. Hunting deaths are very common due to buck fever. That's why hunters wear blaze orange.

It always happens, but this year we seem to have had far more than usual. I doubt there's any part of the world where no hunting deaths happen.

I wonder if many ghosts get shot?

I was once sitting alone in my parents home watching TV when out of the corner of my eye I saw movement. I saw in the darkened living room next to the room where I was watching TV a short hairy scowling man walking a few inches above the carpet. This little ugly creature had a striking resemblance to Lon Chaney in werewolf makeup. I don't believe in ghosts and if I did it wouldn't have looked like ol Lon Chaney. The creature saw me looking and hid behind an easy chair. I got up and looked behind the chair and nothing was there. I've been a lifelong skeptic and years later talking to a psychologist about this weird episode in my life he explained it thusly. Your mind was trying to entertain you. You like scary movies and you were bored. Your brain was trying to entertain you. It was a typical ghost vision. Trouble is I'm not a fan of the paranormal.

I was refering to the continent as a place with no hunting fatalities recently.

I'd guess there would have been in the time of industrial sealers and whalers. (Though probably not through "friendly fire").

Gotcha. I just wondered if you were referring to ghosts - there are a couple of famous examples down there.

Hunting fatalities? Can we count Japanese whalers?

Shurly not cases of mistaken identity, the "friendly fire"

As far as I know, no sumo wrestlers have ever been swimming in the southern ocean. I want to be wrong om this.

There was Jap whaler which caught fire a little while back, but that doesn't quite fit...

If anyone ever went hunting there, it would be a likely place for an accident. One of our Air NZ pilots once failed to see an entire mountain, so mistaking a hunter for a seal would be possible.
