Ghislaine Maxwell

Another couple turns on this merry-go-round, and Ghislaine Maxwell will be able to rehabilitate her reputation as a champion for better jail conditions. "It's a sad comment on our society, that it needed someone with wealth and celebrity to bring attention to the inhumane treatment our citizens receive."

I wasn't referring to that particular case, you would do anything to defend your beloved royals.

Rubbish. If Prince Andrew is an old perv who likes orgies, that's degenerate but it isn't illegal. I agree he should cooperate with the FBI in the Epstein case but his lawyers seem to have advised him to avoid them.

We really don't know how bad they are, beyond being a jail. Her side says, among other things, it smells like sewage. The jail says it's because she refuses to flush her own toilet.

My guess is that neither the jailers nor the jailed have any incentive to make it better. So, basically, the same reason the projects are absolutely the worse type of housing one can be subject to.

I'm just bothered by the notion that the jail is too stanky for the rich. We common folks, it's fine. But richy rich here needs all 5 stars, at our expense no less. I'm not saying it needs to be unsanitary, but when the jailed have an incentive to make it worse, whose fault is it?

It's not to do with 'being rich' it is about sensibilities and what you are used to. Would you be able to cope with being on remand in a cramped cell for over a year, with a stinky toilet at the foot of the bed and prison guards standing over you whilst you sit on it, a light shining all night, a torch in your face every fifteen minutes?

Maybe that is acceptable for a few weeks but months...?

What she is used to is a function of being rich. Would I be able to cope? Probably. But I would flush the damn toilet. Her inability to cope would heighten her flight risk. If all it took to secure her release and flight from justice, was a stopped up toilet, there would be zero functioning toilets in any jail.

Sorry it's not a 5 star accommodation. She should give it a poor Yelp or Trip Advisor review.

Jail is too uncomfortable and the sheets are barely 300 thread count is not justification for release. The rooms are too small, also, not a good reason. Being on suicide watch, also, not a good reason. What she needs is some sort of assurance that she will remain in the jurisdiction until her trial, something nobody has offered. 5 Million USD, isn't it.

But if Andrew's victims were unwilling and/or underage, that is illegal, and should be prosecuted where possible.

If Prince Andrew has sex with a 17-year-old going onto eighteen on UK soil then he has not broken any law, even if he was more than twice her age, overweight, sweaty and a pompous ass. A seventeen-year-old woman in the UK is free to sleep with whomever she likes. She didn't report a rape at the time.

She's only free if she's actually free. If her actions and choices are constrained by human traffickers, she's not actually free to sleep or not sleep with whomever she likes.

And knowingly partaking of the services of sex slavers makes you complicit in their sex-slavery, no matter how old the sex slave happens to be.

It is no lie, and I won't take it back.

I think the only really blatant lie so far is you saying you never said anything about the French judicial view of sex crimes.

If anyone should be personally outraged here, it's the French, whom you characterized as dismissing child sex trafficking with a gallic shrug as anglo-saxon prudery.
You introduced the idea "judicial".

You introduced the idea "judicial".

Wrong! It was Planigale who introduced the idea "judicial"

France would not have extradited her, and the traditional French view of the sort of activities she is accused of would have been a gallic shrug of shoulder and comment on anglo-saxon prudity.

You need to learn to read for context. Second part of the sentence refers to the first part. It clearly implies that France would not have extradited her because the view of those who make decisions about extradition, i.e, the French Judiciary, "of the sort of activities she is accused of, would have been a gallic shrug"

What makes you think Maxwell would let her report a rape? Or talk to the police at all, that time or any other time?

You are over thinking it. Whilst everybody is dwelling on the prurient sex stuff the bigger story IMV is the powerful empire Epstein and Maxwell managed to build up, which encompassed the Clintons, Prince Charles and Prince Andrew, award-winning scientists, the deep state: this was a massive prostitution racket and yet all people can focus on is the salacious stuff of Epstein's massage table.

It's just trolling. Proposing that we put Ms. Maxwell in a hotel. Come on.

I was trying to provide a solution to the ongoing appalling conditions in which Maxwell is being held. A hotel is not necessarily nice. We use hotels in England to house homeless families. There are some hotels you will not catch me setting foot in. Not to mention names but they generally include the words 'travel' or 'premier'.

Maxwell is a sordid character, sure. I don't believe she is a suicide risk. Unlike Epstein, who was a ruthless sociopath and had no qualms about hanging himself, I don't see Maxwell as being of the same ilk. I don't see it's necessary to shine a torch in her face very fifteen minutes whilst asleep.

The latter is sadistic and disgusting.
I am surprised there is support for it on this thread.
Even if just simply good men doing nothing.

She didn't report a rape at the time.
Many victims don't due to how badly such a horrific event messes them up.

Edited for rule 0 and rule 12.

After Epstein, they judiciary are uber careful not to have a repeat performance and rightly so. Did you not notice what happened him? Did you not complain about that?

But no. You want the "fragrant" Maxwell put in a hotel. Merely because she is a rich woman. Maybe she will have a fit of the vapors.

Do you even listen to yourself?

Do you have any evidence for this? Next thing you will be telling us is that this prostitution racked was run out of the basement of Comet Ping Pong

I mean, you do know that there is no such thing as "the deep state"... well at least, not in the way that swivel-eyed, right-wing loonies imagine it.

These all seem to be rough types who can tolerate the harsh exiguous conditions of jail. Someone more fragrant like Maxwell from a sheltered pampered life is likely to be seriously psychologically damaged and anguished by such conditions. I think she should obviously be imprisoned but at least allow her secure house arrest of some kind of hotel where she can be monitored for suicide or escape.

Is this actually a parody?

I know Iain M Banks had something similar in The Empire of Azad, where criminals would be punished with infections (IRRC) and the poor were assumed to have hardier constitutions so were infected with worse diseases... but that was pointedly a corrupt system that The Culture was trying to bring down with the least harm to inhabitants
