George W. Bush 'knew Guantánamo prisoners were innocent'

I wonder why they didn't have enough guilty terrorists, like those supposedly involved in the planning of 9/11. Since there was a shortage, I suppose they wanted to round up as many as possible to give the image of a vast terror network.

This got binned here from the CT section. Stop trying to drag it back.

You do know that the article is about those in the Bush admin. who knew these prisoners were innocent because they were trying to establish a link between 9/11 and Iraq.

It's in the article. That the thread was moved is not my concern.

It's not a CT. There are plenty of threads over there you have run away from rather than drag this one back.

Mr Cheney and Mr Rumsfeld, Colonel Wilkerson said, deemed the incarceration of innocent men acceptable if some genuine militants were captured, leading to a better intelligence picture of Iraq at a time when the Bush Administration was desperate to find a link between Saddam Hussein and 9/11, “thus justifying the Administration’s plans for war with that country”.

So they were looking for a link. Do you think Wilkerson could be lying through his teeth?

Nope. I think Bush and Co. were lying about these prisoners being terrorists or part of the 9/11 plot. Do you think Wilkerson is lying?

What makes you say that?

Not all the people incarcerated in Guantanamo are there for an alleged involvement in 9/11. Most of them are there for either allegedly helping the Taliban or for terrorism charges in general.

Those who are imprisoned for 9/11 are not the ones that the OP's article is talking about.

The US got the guilty guys for 9/11, and they are not hundreds, we all know who they are, and they're not going anywhere.

You're trying to use this story to connect it to 9/11. It's not. Don't do the same mistake Bush and Co did.

If BUsh and Co. had the right guys and the 9/11 planners, why would they need innocent people to bolster support for the War on Terror? It sounds like they didn't have enough justification for their indefinite war. Could it be that the hundreds they rounded up were arbitrary, as opposed to actual terrorists? Hmm, I wonder.

Do you think Wilkerson is lying? Do you think what Bush and his cohorts did was right?

I don't know, but somehow they thought releasing innocents would hinder the support for the invasion.

Yes, most probably, but the ones directly connected to 9/11 are not in question. They are not part of the hundred of innocents alleged in the OP's article.

No. Knowingly incarcerating innocent people is totally wrong.

An open question to the moderators: Can we restart this topic with 100% less truther content?

It's an interesting accusation that does not, on the face of it, seem entirely unlikely, and represents exactly the sort of high crimes that result in a jail sentence. It's one of the saddest chapters in our nations history that Richard Nixon was never tried before a jury of his peers (though where they'd find 13 manipulative jerks on that level is an open question), and I think we're hellbent on repeating it.

I am not lowlife enough to do that based on no evidence. Something that escapes most 911 truth supporters.

I dont think you read your own links do you?

This piece of advice is good, read it.

I don't think you have the underlying reason right here about why mistakes were made arresting innocent people.

Quotas had nothing to do with it. Total lack of accountability (including total lack of judicial oversight), hubris, and ignorance/carelessness are where you should look to for reasons.

And by "totally wrong" do you mean criminal and actionable?

Yes, IMO, but that doesn't mean the current administration has the political will to prosecute. I do believe at least some charges have been filed in Italy regarding extraordinary renditions, and in France, against war crimes or something IIRC.

Completely agree, in fact I don't think they have the political will to do so.

And Spain as well, I believe, not that I think it would ever lead to much. I am curious why when such charges are made by someone so close to the situation, it is not taken much more seriously by the US press, the political left, etc.

For a poster as incessant as Pardalis, I'm shocked that she did not respond to my reasonable question. Isn't this where you would say that you've run away from the discussion?

Can't wait for the Chavez Bush apologists to start spinning this..

oops.. was I too late with that zinger??

Actually, that's something truthers like RedIbis could do that would be productive. Get off their computers and lobby to try to get an investigation going into these allegations (which could lead to real prosecutions) instead of chasing their nanosuperthermite-missiles-planted-DNA-fake-plane-crash chimeras.
