Yep, there are now a lot more famous people (the explosion of numbers caused by mass media) so we will start to see a lot more deaths as a result of that.

According to More or Less the start of this year did see much higher numbers of deaths than usual but the rest of the year was pretty much average, I suspect this month's numbers may push the year overall into being one of the highest (which it should be).

How is this measured? In other words, define "famous".
 
There was a BBC News site piece a week or two ago saying they hsve prepsred obituaries for quite a few celebs of all ages 'just in case'. They compared how many they have used from year to year and there was a 'spike' in the first quarter of the year.
