General UK politics VIII - The Last Tory

Rupert Lowe, an MP tells us what he thinks about the rule of law if he's ever in a position of power.

We owe it to the British people to deport every single one of these fighting age young men who broke into our country.
No appeals, no debate - gone. All of them.

@SuellaBraverman

More hollow words that mean nothing.
The Prime Minister knows that under the ECHR these criminals can’t be deported even if he really wanted to do that.
We must leave the ECHR and take back control of our borders.

On Thursday I get to vote for the new Mayor of the West of England.

One of the candidates has declared they don't want to win, they don't know what the job involves* and they will appoint a deputy to do it. Before clicking the link, why not try to guess which political party they represent limited company they work for?

*Actually, I have some sympathy for that point.

The Tories obvious problem with the ECHR is the letter E. The obvious counter is only to talk about the H and the R.

When Cruella complains about not being able to do as we please because of interfering Europeans, make a particular point of saying what they want to get rid of is people's human rights.

Granted, 'Human Rights' is also a toxic term for the headbangers, but most normal people think humans should probably have some minimal rights.

I would argue that not many supporters of the current Conservative Party care about human rights - other than their own which are sacrosanct.

There are still supporters of the Conservative party?
Throw a rock around here (eastern Monmouthshire) and you'll likely hit one. We have a lot of older well to do people who find Reform UK plc a bit common but who still have a subscription to the Mail, Express or Telegraph.

And apparently Badenoch had the nerve to complain the governments plan to implement the Jay Report is 'too little too late' after the government she was part of sat on it for 2 years, and that was nearly a decade after the scandal that set the Rochdale inquiry into motion. Naturally this has been reported without a hint of irony, as has her promise to protect Britain's rural heritage.

I remember hearing one, because they're always the loudest voice at the bar, back in 2018 or so saying how "All the foreigners should just go back home, we're better off without them" while being completely oblivious to the fact that the pub was run by, and a hub for, the local Portuguese community.
My brother said his local versions of that man got around the fact they were loudly telling him to go home after brexit by saying "but you're not foreign, you're Irish", as if that helped. The empire mentality is strong in the type.

Let us know if you need a fresh delivery or rocks.

I did a stint in a 'country pub' around that time, we had a group of very well off retirees who'd be in literally every day they were in the country. They all had properties in Spain or Portugal, one had a Portuguese wife and they all supported Farage & Brexit. I really hope they all ended up selling those properties at a loss & hate being stuck here for the British winter.

ETA: Replied to wrong post, this was supposed to be a response to The Don.

Yeah, maybe we have a marginally better class of bigot here. The Faragists tend to be lower down the social scale (or perhaps the ones further up the social scale are better at reading the room).

I tend to agree: we had reason to look into the role of our regional mayor after contacting him over a certain issue. The job looks like glorified PR and sales huckster with little in the way of concrete responsibilities nor decision-making powers.

"Make politics local, but don't let them do anything consequential!" seems to be the Westminster thinking here.

ETA Bollocks! I've borked the quote, but can't un-bork it. Sorry Jeremy.

Most of the time they were the only people in the room. Which goes a long way to explaining why the pub is now closed.

Years ago a bunch of Front National types were canvassing in my little town in France. They cheerfully informed me that they didn’t want to expel all non-natives, because there are foreigners and foreigners.
