General UK politics VII -Return of the Starmer

Looks like my vote is going to Labour, then. Not with any great enthusiasm, but still.

My vote which would have gone to Labour is (baring a change in recommendation before the day) going to be going to the Lib Dems, I don't know if this helps.

Meanwhile in Wales, our First Minister has lost a no confidence vote.

I had a quick look. Seems that his party have a razor thin majority, two members were off sick so the opposition had a vote of no confidence which he lost.

Is that about right? Just a stunt?

Not in that order. The vote was called some days ago and, on the day, two members called off sick.

Oh dear, another Tory on a chicken run!

This time it's the party chair, Richard Holden. Liked blethering on about being proud to serve North West Durham, but that constituency is disappearing.

Fortunately, just to the south, Dehenna Davison is jacking it in from Bishop Auckland. An opening for Holden, who's so proud to serve a Co Drham seat!

Aah, no: Bishop is not likely to stay Tory...

So, Holden is trying to sod off to a safe seat. In, initially, that well-known part of Co Durham, Northamptonshire South, then that other part of Co Durham, Central Suffolk and Ipswich North...He's already been told to sod off elsewhere on Durham by the Tories in Basildon and Billericay, but Sunak has insisted that he is allowed to stand in Co Durham in the constituency of...Basildon and Billericay.

Such a proud representative of Co Durham.

Northampton South is not that safe. Neither is Basildon and Billericay. Nor is Suffolk Central.

My constituency is what is now Maidstone and Malling, which since forever has been solid brown-shirted blue with the Tories polling around 60% in previous elections. Current polling has them neck and neck with Labour in the mid-30s, which is extraordinary. Lose the fascists of central Kent and you've lost the country.

Lots of gammons and Tory MPs posting their outrage that French customs officers checked the passports of the parachutists that landed in Normandy as part of the commemorations.

They hate us for saving them, an insult to the memory of the brave British troops, Cowardly surrender monkeys etc.

So not controlling their sovereign borders then?

Something something the point is that it's the French checking their passports and not the Germans something something.

The constituency where my vote will be cast (I live in Spain) has a 96% chance of being won by Labour. Stroud, Gloucestershire.
It was the first place in my life where my vote actually counted and I became good friends with the local, at the time, Labour MP David Drew. He was an amazing local MP. He was replaced by some blow-in London Tory with a small majority who was predictably useless.

His successor candidate is a much respected local GP. I will be proud to help send him to Westminster with a stonking majority.

Although Stroud is weird - like a pound shop Totnes, Glastonbury or Hebden Bridge.
I loved it there.
Brexit put paid to my rural life there.

That only applies to foreigners, these parachutists were British therefore fundamentally honest and consequently exempt from border checks.

I get that the Tories merely wanted to cause inconvenience but what is Plaid expecting I wonder.?

It's not like they're going to form a ruling coalition with the Conservatives and there's no hope of them forming a minority government. Their only hope for a seat at the table is to work with Labour and they've just demonstrated their bad faith.

Stroud is my home town. Yes, it's weird.

I'm now living in the new South Cotswold constituency, which last time I looked was predicted to be a narrow Con hold, but I see is now predicted as a Lib Dem gain. Excellent.

For 20 years we lived in Amberley (5 years, too posh for us), Nailsworth (10 years, loved it but house ended up much too big for the 2 of us after kids had left) then 5 years in Watledge (less than 1 km from the Nailsworth house).
We absolutely loved it there, we were so sad when Brexit forced our move.

Mind you I love where we are now.

Give our regards to the area.

The neighbouring constituency of Tonbridge is still more likely to be Tory: 58:42 though according to electoral calculus, which is also surprisingly narrow, given how blue it is.

Having West Malling in Maidstone and Malling as a boundary change does make sense to me as West Malling and Tonbridge always seem quite separate (and East Malling is definitely within Maidstone's orbit).

Not so sure about that. East Malling was always the far side of the woods and the North Pole pub was the boundary marker between civilisation and the great unknown #localreference

I just realised that Sunak called the election when he did because of the D-Day stuff.

ETA: From his speech: "“We cannot possibly hope to repay that debt but we can and we must pledge never to forget.”"

You mean like forgetting why we have the ECHR and ECtHR? I really hope Starmer brings that up in the next debate - the hypocrisy makes my stomach turn.
