General Great British Politics Thread!

I think part of the of the concern of the change is to do with how it will be enforced, isn't the proposal that there will be no more compliance checking/enforcement?

Don't really know what the issue is, but if its voluntary won't local councils still need a compulsory way to register everyone for council tax purposes anyway? Are we just going to end up with double work?

I honestly don't know - it's one of those things that I've heard bits and pieces about but never looked into, which is remiss but hey reading about mass-murdering foreign cats not being deported because they can't get Whiskas in Somalia takes up a lot of my time.

There are so many lies guttering out of this government that there's a danger that the odd truth will emerge and be ignored.

Shows how ineffectual Labour is in even getting the boot in for such a clear-cut problem for the coalition i.e. their plans were based on growth rates that have not materialised. Which means their "plan A" has been shown to be simply wrong.

I've been unsure whether Labour are being clever or ineffectual, I'm now leaning heavily toward the latter. Currently listening to PMQs hoping for someone to bring up this government's failure to do anything for anyone other than their own.

We don't care about low interest rates when we've more unemployment at any time since 1994.

When asked where the PMs plan for growth was, the reply? "Where's yours?"

It's ruling class arrogance rather than developmental arrest, or maybe the two are synonymous! I wouldn't expect much different from Labor if they were in power, though. Remember kid Blair?

Changes to the rules on succession have moved closer after David Cameron shared his plans with the 15 other countries who have the Queen as their monarch.

The PM wants to scrap the ban on spouses of Roman Catholics ascending to the throne and give girls the same right of succession as boys.

But he needs the 15 other Commonwealth nations to agree to the changes.

Minister dumps documents in park bins

Cabinet Office minister Oliver Letwin has admitted throwing out official paperwork in park bins near No 10.
He was photographed by the Daily Mirror disposing of private letters and other papers over five days.
The paper claims more than 100 were thrown away including correspondence on terrorism and national security.

His office said papers were not "sensitive"

Okay. So the papers aren't sensitive, or so we're told. This still seems to be one of the more impressively stupid things I've heard of ministers doing.

I wonder if the constituents whose letters (containing their names and addresses and details of their concerns) were dumped in a park bin would consider those to be "sensitive". I don't even throw my electricity bill into the bin without shredding it.

Mind you, he's probably go his mind on other things, noted polymath that he is.

I think he's said they are not classified, but they do seem to be sensitive and confidential. Actually, my first thought was that he should be recycling the paper, not putting it in a general rubbish bin.

Well, at least he did put it in a bin, rather than drop it as litter in the park. There seems to be a failure among MPs to appreciate that someone may actually be observing them at any time.

I'm perfectly happy for Kate to be queen, so long as Pippa is vice queen and they both get to wear sexy uniforms n' stuff.

If we must have a Royal Family, they might at least be pretty. There are too many Royal Family knockers out there , I feel.
