Gaza villages Wiped off the map

gdnp --"And how long if I were, for example, a descendent of someone displaced in 1948, would I have to wait for a visa to move to Tel Aviv?"

You are aware, I assume, of the Israeli Visa Requirments?

IDB87, I might be missing something here but the Wikipedia article didn't seem to mention Arab religious leaders asking or demanding Palestinians leave their home.

Strange. When I clicked on that link, it brought me to this article - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1948_Palestinian_exodus - which does mention the Arab Higher Committee, referrenced by Efraim Karsh.

Regarding Haifa,

-while the rest, some 15,000–25,000, were ordered to leave, almost certainly on the instructions of the Arab Higher Committee

This is only speculation on Karsh's part, though.

Previously you asked a question about how many were instructed to leave by their religious leaders. I asked if you knew the answer or had any evidence that it had happened at all.

And I did say that my knowledge was limited on the subject, which is why I asked TFT if he knew, rather than telling him.

Are you now saying that you don't have any evidence for this but just threw the question in to move the conversation along? Did you see something in the Wikipedia article that suggested it happened?

I never claimed complete ignorance on the subject and only held it as unverified. When discussing refugees, is it wrong to consider that perhaps a percentage were instrcuted to leave on behalf of their leaders? Whether it is true or not is the whole point in asking the question.

How do you think the Arab leaders took advantage of the massacre of the Palestinians? What do you think the Arab leaders should have done with regard to the massacre?

Panic flight of Arabs across Palestine intensified. It was also used as a strong argument for the Arab states to intervene against Israel, Arab League chief Azzam Pasha said "The massacre of Deir Yassin was to a great extent the cause of the wrath of the Arab nations and the most important factor for sending [in] the Arab armies".

How would you describe this?

We were not discussing the requirements to visit Israel. We were discussing the supposed freedom that you claimed that non-Jews have to purchase land and live in Israel. You posted that people from Egypt and Jordan were not prohibited from owning property or living in Israel. Yet there are many people today that reside in Jordan or Egypt who wish to do just that--people displace in 1948 or since then, and their descendants--who Israel has stated repeatedly and categorically cannot.

It seems almost a catch-22: anyone can buy property and live in Israel except the people who want to.

Are you trying to tell us that Israeli-Arabs are NOT allowed to buy any land in Israel?

I'm calling big BS.

Yes. Israel is waiting for a final peace treaty between them and the Palestinians to settle the issue of lost land and property in Israel.

Funny little fact... the name "Palestine" itself originated in an effort by the Romans to ethnically cleanse the Levant of Jews.

"Zionist Apologist!!!!....We all know that the Palestinians are direct descendants of the Canaanites and Philistines!!!!"

:D

I don't think think the Romans ever had plans to ethnically cleanse the Levant of Jews, which simply wouldn't have been feasible. Hadrian's renaming of the province of Iudaea as Syria Palaestina was partly meant as a humiliating punishment for the Bar Khokhba revolt and partly as a means of undermining any further Jewish aspirations for independence. The only instance of ethnic cleansing, in the strict sense of the term, I'm aware of is that Jerusalem was made forbidden to Jews, a restriction which lasted until the 4th century. As the cultural and religious hub of the Jewish nation, the city's complete domination by the Romans was a conscious effort to suppress Jewish nationalism, and it was renamed Aelia Capitolina for much the same reason that the whole province was renamed.

There was a bit more to it than that. After the Bar Khokhba revolt Hardian embarked on a systematic suppression of Jews and Judaism. Torah law and the Hebrew calendar were banned, scholars were executed, and the sacred scroll was burned on the Temple Mount. Thousands and thousands of Jews were sold into slavery and purposefully scattered across the Empire. Entire Jewish communities were wiped out. In that context, the renaming of Judea was much more than an effort to humiliate the Jewish independence movement. Hadrian wanted to eradicate the historic Jewish claim to their homeland; that's why he named it after their traditional enemies.

And it worked; look at the power that the association between "Palestinian" and "Palestine" now has.

One convenient omission in regards to the Deir Yassin incident, was that Iraqi irregulars were based and were holding many of the Deir Yassin as hostages. The issue of cause and effect is quite backwards, as is the retrospective rewriting of history to suite the Palestinian/Naqba cause.

I wonder how many Palestinian villages and towns in nearby Arab nations were wiped off the face of the map by Muslim-love-your-brother-Muslim dictators?

Oop. Best not go there.

Yawn. Don't forget to mention Darfur btw. That's the usual diversion.

Did the "Zionist Apologists" fabricate the Jenin "massacre" hoax?

No, Palestinian terrorist groups put out a lot of bollocks about it. They often do....like Israel and thier apologists do on other topics. Whats your point? besides a diversion....

I hope that TFT changes his avatar on Monday next, when the new Israeli Government is presented, and Ms Livni takes her seat in the opposition benches. That animation is among the most annoying ever featured here.

Not completely true. The Gaza area, plus about 50 miles north and a few miles east was known as Philistia...or "Palaestina" in Latin.
