What would possess a gay person to even indulge in one of those programs? Ohh wait, the stupid belief that gayness is morally wrong.

Being in a minority subjects people to all sorts of discrimination and other abuse. For gay people, this can include rejection by family and "friends." One escape from all this would be to stop being gay.
